It’s been a full year and a half since we’ve heard anything from the Zombie Land Saga camp, but we’re starting 2021 on the right note with the reveal of a brand new key visual (seen above) and promotional video (seen below) for the upcoming second season, which will premiere in April 2021! The new promotional video lasts for over two-minutes long and re-introduces all the characters.
The first season of this series was first announced in July 2018. The anime series was produced by studio MAPPA (Kids on the Slope, Yuri!!! on Ice, Kagegurui) with Munehisa Sakai sitting in the director’s chair, while Shigeru Murakoshi (To the Abandoned Sacred Beasts) handled the series composition. A manga adaptation was launched online in October 2018. The twelve-episode anime series aired from October 2018 to December 2018. They announced the second season with a key visual and promotional video back in July 2019.
The plot of this series can be described as a “ZomCom,” with the main character being a teenage girl named Sakura Minamoto, who was alive in the year 2008. One day, while leaving her house to audition to become an idol, she is killed by a speeding truck. Ten years later, she is revived by a producer named Kotaro along with six other “legendary” girls from various eras of Japanese history, including a former biker gang leader named Saki Nikaido, an “idol” from the Showa era (from around 1926–1989) named Junko Konno, a young woman who was alive in early 19th century Japan named Yugiri, and others. Together they collectively form the idol group Franchouchou with the intention of “saving” Saga prefecture.
The new season of Zombie Land Saga has been a long time coming, but there is really no reason to believe that studio MAPPA will not be able to deliver again with this sequel. They set the stage for a spectacular second run with these zombie idols, and fans around the world are already looking forward to it.
