It’s always sad when beloved pets leave us. They’re furry family members who occupy a place in our hearts and souls. A new dog found its way to a depressed author in Kinokoinu — Mushroom Pup. As the name implies, this is no ordinary canine. We’ll see how the author handles a new pet when this anime series premieres sometime in October 2024.
Kimama Aoboshi released the original Kinokoinu — Mushroom Pup manga series from July 17th, 2010, to February 28th, 2022. Tokuma Shoten published all fifteen volumes in Monthly Comic Ryu.
The mushroom pet, its owner, and the owner’s editor are as follows:
- Kinokoinu — Daiki Kobayashi (Saki Mizushima from The iDOLM@STER SideM). A dog-like creature who grew from a mushroom. It quickly bonds with Hotaru upon sprouting from the soil.
- Hotaru Yuyami — Yuto Uemura (Amajiki Tamaki from My Hero Academia). A picture book author who continues to mourn his family dog’s passing.
- Komako Amano — Anna Nagase (Boxers, Isabella from Cyberpunk: Edgerunners). Hotaru’s childhood friend and an employee at a publishing company.
Studio C-Station has maintained a home page, a TikTok page, an Instagram page, and a Twitter (X) page to promote Kinokoinu — Mushroom Pup. You can find more information about the series and the key visuals there. Kinokoinu seems to have turned Hotaru’s life upside down.
Grow a New Dog in Kinokoinu — Mushroom Pup
Hotaru Yuyami is a moderately successful picture book author. He has recently entered a slump due to mourning his family’s dog, Hanako. Hotaru’s life took a turn when he noticed one of the mushrooms in his garden begin to move. A dog-like creature sprouted and started following him around like an actual dog. Hotaru decided to keep it and quickly discovered that Kinokoinu doesn’t always act like a dog.
The mushroom dog likes to eat human food, and he’s seen using a marker to draw on paper. Hotaru informs Komako Amano (his childhood friend and editor) and Itsuki Yara from the mushroom research club about the miraculous fungus-based pet. Regardless of how things came to be, Kinokoinu brings Hotaru out of his slump so he can move on from his dog’s passing.
