Originally launching back in 2013, Love Live! has become one of the most successful franchises of this decade, and for good reason. Both the main series and the Sunshine spinoff series are filled with memorable and heartfelt stories, characters, and catchy musical numbers which have kept idol fans entertained for years, and it seems that this will continue on into the next decade as well.
On December 15th, it was revealed at a concert in Japan that there will be another Love Live! spinoff television anime titled Nijigasaki Gakuen School Idol Dōkōkai (Nijigasaki Academy’s School Idol Appreciation Club). They revealed no release date for the series, but stay tuned for more details as they are released to the public.
The girls of Nijigasaki Academy were first introduced to audiences via the Love Live School Idol Festival mobile game, back in 2017. Over the last two years, they have been fleshed out into real characters in the game (the previously mentioned concert was actually the first for the Nijigasaki Academy idols) though it’s unclear if the story of the television series will follow the story from the game.
In the original anime, the story features a school idol group called μ’s who are working to save their school from shutting down by bringing in more prospective students. It was followed by a second season, movie, animated music videos, and much more. In 2016, a spinoff series titled Love Live Sunshine started airing which features the group Aquors (the name was decided on by fans through a popular vote). This anime series was equally successful if not more so and also got a second season and movie.
It’s impossible to tell if the second spinoff series will be as successful as the first, but, judging by the overall history of the franchise, I can say that it wouldn’t be a huge leap of faith to say that if this one follows the same formula as the first two series, the next decade will also belong to the Love Live! girls.
