Wow, Netflix, way to put all your weight behind one of your best properties. No really, five whole new episodes for The Way of the Househusband? You shouldn’t have. No, I mean really, you shouldn’t have.
In an announcement that went live in the middle of the night on Wednesday, September 8th, Netflix revealed that the net anime adaptation of the hit manga The Way of the Househusband is getting a second season, which will hit the service on October 7th. The second season will comprise five episodes, though no further details were revealed regarding if the series will feature the same short episode length as the first season. We know that J.C. Staff is returning to produce the animation.
Here’s the problem with this series that I think everyone is thinking and a few people are saying out loud; what’s the point? When the first season of this adaptation was first announced back in October 2020, I was one of the first to get incredibly excited about it. As a well-established fan of the manga series, I was beyond pumped to see this series brought to the world of anime. Then the first season was released and was almost universally panned because of its low-quality animation style, short episode length, and writing that just fell flat on the floor. Now we’re getting five more episodes of the same thing just a few months later. This breaks my heart.
With over a million copies of the manga in print around the world and multiple awards (including a freakin Eisner award), it’s hard to understand the logic that Netflix is putting into this. This is one of the best comedies of the last few years and Netflix looks like it spent its lunch money on the animation. Very disappointing and it makes me wish that anyone else had gotten the rights to this property. Regardless, you can look forward to our review of the second season later this year here on the J-List Blog.
