The last time we talked about the upcoming anime adaptation of manga series Moriarty the Patriot was back on December 24th. Ever since then, it’s been radio silence from Japan regarding this series. That changed on the morning of March 3rd, when we got our first look at this series, which still does not have a premiere date.
According to the official website, the series will have animation produced by Production I.G and feature Kazuya Nomura as director. Tooru Ohkubo will provide character designs. The key visual reveals three of the characters; Moriarty and two other unknown men looking very dapper.
Moriarty the Patriot is a manga written by Takeuchi Ryousuke and illustrated by Miyoshi Hikaru that first appeared in Jump SQ magazine in August 2016. It has since been compiled into ten volumes thus far. While this will be the first time that the series has received a television adaptation, it isn’t the first time that it has been animated, as a promotional video was produced for the manga back in July 2018.
Additionally, the manga inspired a stage musical that ran in May of 2019. A second stage musical will be produced and run this coming summer season.
The story for the manga takes place in Victorian England and follows the sworn enemy of Sherlock Holmes. In this version of the story, Moriarty is an orphan along with his brother and they are adopted into the same family. After growing up in the noble household, the brothers decide to turn to a life of crime with the ultimate objective being to eliminate the class system in England.
On February 14th of this year, Viz Media announced that it had acquired the North American digital and physical licensing rights to the manga and will begin releasing it in the fall 2020 season.
