Capcom has been firing on all cylinders over the past year, releasing several homerun titles such as Resident Evil Village, Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin, and of course, Monster Hunter: Rise. During the Nintendo Direct on September 23rd, fans of Rise got a sneak peek at the upcoming expansion: Sunbreak. Check out the teaser below!
Not much is explained about Sunbreak, but we do get some clues about the thematic elements. The trailer showcases a derelict gothic cathedral, a notable departure from the Japan-centric themes in the base game. The sanguine-colored moon, ghastly elder dragon, and the name itself, “Sunbreak,” seem to indicate we’re moving into a vampiric, supernatural-themed expansion. Rathalos, the flagship monster for the Monster Hunter series, is also customarily sacrificed to this new threat. The elder dragon appears to hold the defeated “King of the Skies” by the nape of his neck, accented with gulping, sucking noises.
Yoshiaki Koizumi, the host of the Nintendo Direct, said the expansion will include new stories, locales, monsters, hunting actions, and quest rank. “Hunting actions” seems to imply more wirebug skills are inbound, but there wasn’t any clarification given. “Quest rank” is pretty easy to deduce for veteran hunters: Sunbreak is bringing G-rank or Master Rank, whichever title they choose to use.
Pricing was not mentioned.
Monster Hunter has never been a horror genre, but I do enjoy being actually afraid of the thing I’m hunting. For me, I’m hoping for some terrifying yet awesome abominations to smack around with my hammer. Perhaps we’ll even see the return of some of the death-and-decay-themed monsters, like Nakarkos or Vaal Hazak. Let us know what is on your Sunbreak wishlist, I’d love to see some suggestions.
Grab your max potions, suit up your palico, and eat your bunny dango, because Sunbreak rises in the Summer of 2022. Yeah, it’s a bit of a wait yet, but Capcom has been bringing their A-game lately, and I expect this will be no different.
If you want to get right into hunting vampires without waiting for next summer, Castlevania: Advance Collection was just released!
