Even selling modified versions of your waifus can get you behind bars.
A 39-year-old man from Yachiyo, Chiba was arrested by police in Inashiki, Ibaraki on Thursday on suspicion of selling modified Love Live! character figures without permission. The suspect claimed to be a member of the sales industry and admitted that he had been selling these figures to cover his daily living expenses. The illegal selling done by this man was discovered by authorities through a “cyber patrol” that happened in autumn last year.
According to the report, the man allegedly took the head of a Love Live! Nico Yazawa figure and placed it on the neck of a Girls und Panzer Darjeeling figure. It was sold on an auction website last year, September 6th, for 3,000 yen (around US$27). This type of remodeling is known as 魔改造 or ‘devil remodeling’ among figure collectors. Authorities have also confirmed that the prices for each of his modified figures usually go from 1,000 yen (around US$9) to as much as 15,000 yen (around US$137).
Aside from this, the suspect might also be facing criminal charges due to questionable deposits in his personal bank account worth 8.5 million yen (around US$77,000) from November 2016 until October 2018. Authorities have also confiscated around 1,000 female figures from his residence for further investigation.
