Few anime franchises are as well-known and influential as Gundam. Whether you like giant robots or not, you have to agree that plenty of anime fans (especially Western anime fans) picked up the anime because of it. Toonami airing Gundam Wing back in 2000 is THE reason so many 30-year-old+ otaku love mecha anime so much. And anyone who’s a fan of the franchise will be pleased to know that another anime project is on its way. Mobile Suit Gundam RG XARX-ZERO, the newest anime in the franchise, will premiere in 2027. And it comes as part of a much larger initiative.

According to Bandai Namco, the upcoming anime will be the first installment of a new Gundam universe multimedia project. Japanese science-fiction writer Toh En Joe (Self-Reference ENGINE, Harlequin Butterfly) collaborated in the creation of the new universe. Besides En Joe’s stellar work as an author, they also provided the series composition and scripts for Godzilla Singular Point and The Ghost in the Shell.
Mobile Suit Gundam RG XARX-ZERO’s timeline will connect with the upcoming Gundam Rouge Orbit video game. The anime takes place a century before the game.
Mobile Suit Gundam RG XARX-ZERO Production Details and Synopsis
As with any upcoming project, information about the anime’s production staff and VAs is minimal. But we do know who’s filling some positions — the staff members include:
- Kenji Kamiyama — Director
- Eiichi Shimizu — Gundam Design
- Toh En Joe — SF Setting Supervisor
- Miyako Takasu — Character Design and Supervising Animation Director
- Go Shiina — Music
- SUNRISE — Planning
- SOLA Animation — Studio
Takeo Otsuka (Aqua in Oshi no Ko) will voice Ray Azumi.
Mobile Suit Gundam RG XARX-ZERO takes place in a galaxy far, far away in a universe where humanity has spread across the solar system thanks to the revelations of an “Autonomous Interstellar Object.” But when that same object turns against us, the apocalypse it unleashes forces us to abandon Earth. Decades after that event, the children of our space colonizers look toward Earth without the memory of what our home used to be. But when a war orphan named Ray awakens on the moon, he might lead humanity into a new future.
