Honkai: Star Rail (Bēnghuài: Xīngqióng Tiědào) is no stranger to anime shorts. We’ve seen a good couple of anime shorts, from memes to dazzling dances. However, it’s a bit different this time. Mihoyo tapped studio MAPPA to release Honkai: Star Rail x MAPPA Animation Concept Trailer — “Death in the Afternoon.” The term “concept trailer” leads people to believe this is more than just another animated short. The subtitle is a possible reference to a book by Ernest Hemingway, the cocktail named after his book, or Gallagher’s Level 5 Eidolon. For their part, Mihoyo hasn’t provided any additional information in their different official posts.
Let’s take a closer look at the “concept trailer” and the story it promises. It’s available in multiple languages, including Japanese and English.

Mihoyo released the original Honkai: Star Rail video game on April 26th, 2023. The game leaped from computers and mobile devices to consoles on October 11th, 2023.

Three of the stellar leads from this trailer are as follows:
- Kafka. Kafka is a Stellaron Hunter who specializes in inflicting fear.
- Silver Wolf. Silver Wolf is a Stellaron Hunter who specializes in hacking computers.
- Stelle (female)/Caelus(male). Stella/Caelus is the amnesiac Trailblazer who wields a mighty bat.
Mihoyo maintains a home page, a Facebook page, a Discord server, a Reddit page, a TikTok channel, an Instagram page, and a Twitter (X) page to promote Honkai: Star Rail. You can find more information about the series and the key visuals at those sites.
Plan During the Day, Death in the Afternoon
The Stellaron Hunters are one of the many factions that seek to influence the future of the universe. As their name suggests, they seek Stellarons, almighty objects that can bring disaster to whatever world they reside upon. Kafka, Blade, Firefly, and Silver Wolf follow Elio, a man known as Destiny’s Slave for his ability to predict the future. Their motives and goals are unknown, but that doesn’t stop various law enforcement organizations from trying to arrest them.
Their most recent mission takes them to a club where they get to work the dance floor. Kafka naturally turns many heads with her tantalizing moves. The Stellaron Hunters proceed to wipe out animal-headed enemies under the close observation of a mysterious individual whom fans assume to be Elio himself. We’re shown Kafka’s past when she meets the black cat that recruits her to the Stellaron Hunters. The end screen promises “a new story awaits,” with a lovely and lethal Kafka holding a gun and a wine glass.
