What if you had the chance to go back in time and save someone? Would you do it?
In an announcement posted online on Thursday, June 18th, we got the news that the manga series Tokyo Revengers will get a television anime adaptation in 2021!
Originally a manga series created by author Ken Wakui, which started serializing in Weekly Shonen Magazine in March 2017, the series has been compiled into seventeen volumes in Japan as of May 2020. The series is being released digitally in English by Kodansha Comics who describe the story as:
Watching the news, Takemichi Hanagaki learns that his girlfriend from way back in middle school, Hinata Tachibana, has died. The only girlfriend he ever had was just killed by a villainous group known as the Tokyo Manji Gang. He lives in a crappy apartment with thin walls, and his six-years-younger boss treats him like an idiot. Plus, he’s a complete and total virgin … At the height of his rock-bottom life, he suddenly time-leaps twelve years back to his middle school days!! To save Hinata, and change the life he spent running away, hopeless part-timer Takemichi must aim for the top of Kanto’s most sinister delinquent gang!!
If the title of this series sounds vaguely familiar, it might be because this isn’t the first time that Tokyo Revengers has appeared in the news. Earlier this year, the series won the Kodansha Manga Award in Japan in the shonen category and the series is also set to get a live-action movie adaptation later this year.
This announcement generated a fair amount of buzz among online anime communities when it first appeared and, after watching the above preview and the story synopsis, I can understand why. Stay tuned to the J-List Blog for more details about this series as they are revealed in the coming weeks and months!
