When Made In Abyss released in 2012, it made spelunking look entertaining with a lush fantasy setting that wouldn’t be out of place in a role-playing game. However, as readers descended further into the story, much like our protagonist Riko, both the Abyss and the story unfolded into a much darker realm of fantasy, complete with moments that made the spelunking horror film The Descent look like a walk in the park.
Despite an intense first impression, Made In Abyss left a mark on the manga scene, which ultimately culminated in an anime adaptation in 2017 which spared no expense in bringing that dark, lush fantasy setting to life complete with all those gut and heart-wrenching moments that captivated readers in the first place.
Now, four years from the anime’s release, one movie, and the slow but steady pace of the manga, Made In Abyss manages to make its mark on the world once again — by releasing an RPG. Titled Made In Abyss: Binary Star Falling into Darkness, all signs point to this possibly being one of the most true-to-form anime video games ever released. Produced by Spike Chunsoft with supervision by author Akihito Tsukushi, the story will be two-fold, both following the events of the anime and creating an entirely new story thread where the player character descends the Abyss as a new Cave Raider. In addition to a brand new story, both the main and supporting cast of the story returns, with events being fully voiced by the anime’s cast. The game is slated for release in 2022 on PS4, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam.
While the idea of a Made In Abyss game feels a bit farfetched, it isn’t an unwelcome idea. It’s also not the only good news the Made in Abyss franchise has for us. The official series website has announced the anime is also getting a second season in 2022 as well! A look at the key visual for the second season is below.
Titled Made In Abyss: The Golden Town of the Relentless Day, it’s nice to see Riko and Ren’s story getting back on track. While it’s not clear where the new season will pick up, there’s a good chance it’ll continue after the events of the most recent movie Made In Abyss: Dawn of the Deep Soul.
