My word, what is that shining into my eyes? Could it be the rarest of all anime treasures… it is! It’s a polyamorous friendly anime series!
A brand new key visual (seen above) and key staff members were revealed for the upcoming anime adaptation of the manga series Kanojo mo Kanojo (She’s A Girlfriend Too) which will air before the end of 2021! The key visual depicts the two female leads, Nagisa (left) and Saki (right).
In the manga series (which was originally a one issue doujin released in English by Irodori Aqua under the title Two-Timing Fair and Square), the story follows a brand new hinge relationship (two different people both dating the same person) that gets off to a rocky start. The main character is a first-year high school student names Naoya who is dating Saki. Things are going smoothly between the two of them when suddenly another girl, Nagisa, confesses to him. Instead of turning her down, however, he proposes to the girls that they both date him. At first, Saki is angry and reluctant but eventually agrees and thus starts their new life together.
The ongoing manga series, created by Hiroyuki (Aho Girl, The Comic Artist and His Assistants, Doujin Work) debuted in Weekly Shonen Magazine last March.
In terms of the announced crew, this series will see the reunion of director Satoshi Kuwabara and writer Keiichiro Ochi, who both worked on The Quintessential Quintuplets. Tezuka Productions will produce the animation and Akiko Toyoda is handling the anime character designs.
This is personally very exciting to me, as polyamorous friendly anime are very few and far between with only two examples coming to mind of series that treated the concept with respect: Maoyu and In Another World With My Smartphone. Having read the original Kanojo mo Kanojo doujin that the manga series is based on, however, I found that the story had problematic elements that were squarely due to the story being rushed in order to be crammed into one issue. I haven’t read the ongoing manga series yet, but I sincerely hope that now that the story has had time to breathe in an ongoing format, it will resolve these problematic elements and tell a story that the polyamorous community can be proud of.
