Wit Studio is celebrating the tenth anniversary of its zombie-infested series with a new anime short. It’s been a good, long while since we last saw Ikoma and Mumei take on hordes of zombies to defend their trusty train and lifeline. What better way to tell people about their new ¥35,000 ($222.24) Mumei Ranman scale figure than with a brand new anime short? It’s only a few minutes long, but boy does it show off a lot. It’s good to see Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress (Kotetsujo no Kabaneri) again, even if it’s just a figure ad.

Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress: Mumei Ranman News, Cast, Staff
Most of the original staff have returned to their old train. Tetsuro Araki is on hand to direct the production and pen the story, Yasuyuki Ebara has done a great job designing these characters (especially Mumei), and Hiroyuki Sawano is here with the great anime tunes.
The two titular kabaneri are as follows:
- Mumei — Sayaka Senbongi (Cixous from Overlord). Mumei is a kind girl and Ikoma’s instructor on the ways of a kabaneri.
- Ikoma — Tasuku Hatanaka (Denki Kaminari from My Hero Academia). Ikoma is a steamsmith who has sworn to destroy the Kabane.
Wit Studio will animate the anime adaptation, which has an official website and Twitter (X) accounts promoting Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress. You can find more information about the series and the key visuals at those sites.
Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress: Mumei Ranman Preparing to Impress the Guy at the End of the World
Who says people can’t enjoy a bit of romance during a zombie apocalypse? Mumei busies herself polishing a rifle in an armory, as is her job. However, she’s wearing a new, revealing outfit for the task. Damn, she looks good. Whoever she’s dressing for is a lucky person indeed. Oh, it’s Ikoma? Then the man better stand and deliver. She puts in all that effort; he had better not do the stereotypical thing of acting all shy and doing nothing.
It’s clear Wit Studio wanted to give fans something good for the anniversary. Mumei stole the show for a full five minutes, from wearing that great outfit to putting on makeup and taking out an almost unseen group of Kabane. Maybe we might not get another season or movie, but Wit certainly cares enough about the series to give us five minutes of all sorts of action. In a good timeline, we would at least get an epilogue that wraps up the story, tells us Ikoma did what was necessary, and that he turned this waifu into a wife and had a large family.
A Closer Look at Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress
Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress anime synopsis:
At a time when the industrial revolution was carrying the world into the modern age, a horde of undead monsters suddenly appeared. They could not be killed unless their hearts, which were protected by a layer of iron, were pierced. These undead, which would later be known as “Kabane,” exploded in population until they finally overran the world. The people of Hinomoto, built fortresses known as “stations” that have allowed them to survive the threat of the Kabane. Ikoma is a young steamsmith living at Aragane Station, working on developing a unique anti-Kabane weapon called a “piercing gun”.
Tetsuro Araki and Ichiro Okouchi wrote the original Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress for Wit Studio. The series ran between April 8th, 2016, and June 30th, 2016. The manga adaptation debuted on May 2nd, 2016. The first anime film premiered on December 31st, 2016.
