You know, I think we sometimes take for granted how easy it is to access pornography in the west. In many (most?) western countries, finding some adult entertainment is as easy as pointing your browser to your favorite website, and double-clicking in order to gain access to all the fully uncensored, unfiltered porn that your heart could desire. It’s not quite that easy in Japan, though.
While yes, they might get some things we don’t get like a doujin actress farting into a microphone, their live-action pornography leaves a lot to the imagination. Literally. Why? Because it is illegal to show uncensored sex in any kind of adult entertainment. Instead, the creators have to put hard mosaics over the actors’ genitals, which begs the question of what even is the point?
Regardless, one man in Kyoto learned the hard way that even clever cheats of the system are still cheats that can be punishable by law.
According to the original report, the Kyoto Prefectural Police have arrested a 43-year-old man who lived in Takasago, Hyogo Prefecture for using AI to replace the mosaics on porn with actual, uncensored sex. Now, as is also pointed out in the original report, his crime isn’t so much that he did it but more that he tried to monetize his work by selling full versions of the videos via a website, which is a big no-no in Japan. Between the months of December and August, it’s believed that the man sold around 12,000 videos, which netted him over $100,000.
The man is being charged with the display of obscene electromagnetically recorded media and also charges of copyright violation because he would display samples of his work in order to entice people into buying the full version.
By the way, now feels like a good time to remind everyone that the eroge and bishoujo games that are sold on J-List are completely mosaic-free. Just saying.
