It’s been a while since we last discussed Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? (Danjon ni Deai o Motomeru no wa Machigatteiru Daro ka, DanMachi). Besides the cute elf girl, I mean. Season 5 has been announced, and a teaser trailer recounting iconic moments in the series has been released. There’s no premiere date quite yet. The new tagline is “I want to find out if this feeling is ‘Love’ or not.”
Fujino Omori and Suzuhito Yasuda first released their DanMachi light novel on January 15th, 2013. SB Creative has since released nineteen volumes in the GA Bunko imprint. The anime adaptation first premiered on April 4th, 2015. J.C.Staff has since animated 59 episodes and three OVAs.
Our harem protagonist and two girls, one of whom is definitely Best Girl, are as follows:
- Bell Cranel — Yoshitsugu Matsuoka (Inosuke Hashibira in Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba). A novice solo adventurer and member of the Hestia Familia. He explores the dungeon while striving to become a hero. Bell is desperately in love with Ais.
- Hestia — Inori Minase (Itsuki Nakano in The Quintessential Quintuplets). The patron goddess and owner of the Hestia Familia. Her Familia isn’t the most popular or wealthy, so it’s based in an old church, and she has a part-time job. She is desperately in love with Bell.
- Ais Wallenstein — Saori Onishi (Yuki Sumi in Oshi no Ko). A beautiful and powerful swordswoman of the Loki Familia who bears the title Sword Princess. Ais has something of an interest in Bell.
J.C.Staff has maintained several websites to promote DanMachi, which includes a home page, a Twitter/X page, an Instagram page, and a TikTok page. Potential viewers can visit those sites to find behind-the-scenes information and the new Key Visual.
J.C.Staff Explores the Dungeon Again
J.C.Staff is one of those studios that can considered truly “legendary.” The studio was founded long ago, on January 18th, 1986, by Tomoyuki Miyata, who previously worked at Tatsunoko Production. They’re most known for their work on Edens Zero, the Do You Love Your Mom and Her Two-Hit Multi-Target Attacks?, The Familiar of Zero, Shingetsutan Tsukihime, Azumanga Daioh, and One-Punch Man.
It’s Okay and Encouraged to Pick up Girls in a Dungeon
Despite the title, Bell only actively pursues one girl. Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? is apt in that Bell meets and befriends multiple girls throughout the series. However, he doesn’t seem to be trying to build a harem. If he were, he would have a literal goddess supporting him, but she’s the jealous type. She’s also the Best Girl type, but I digress.
Our up-and-coming knight of legend is Bell Cranel. He lives in the Labyrinth City Orario as part of the Hestia Familia. His dreams of becoming a great hero see him visit the Babel tower and plumb the dungeon depths. It is a regular profession to venture into the dungeon to slay monsters and collect items, such as the magic crystals that appear when a dungeon creature dies. The gods themselves support the venture with their own Familias.
Bell admires the famed swordswoman of the Loki Familia, Ais Wallenstein. Her sheer power and beauty captured his attention after she saved his life. With Ais part of his life, Bell’s goal of attaining the strength of a hero gets closer. While he’s busy pursuing her, other girls, from goddesses to mortals, are chasing after him.
