This past weekend, Crunchyroll held a virtual convention that was filled to the brim with special guests, big announcements, and industry panels. One of those industry panels was hosted by anime retailers Right Stuf who made a very big and very NSFW announcement (NSFW link) involving their adults-only Critical Mass anime label.
That’s right, Right Stuf has sub-licensed the raunchy sex comedy anime Interspecies Reviewers and will release it on Blu-ray in North America in 2021! Right Stuf describes the series as:
In a world bursting at the seams with moe monsters and humanoids of the horned sort, which brave heroes will take it upon themselves to review the beastly babes of the red-light district? Behold the most tantalizing of trials.
For those who missed it in early 2020, Interspecies Reviewers made its mark in a hurry by becoming the first series in recent memory to begin airing, and then just as suddenly be taken off the air because of its content.
Originally a manga series written by Amahara and illustrated by masha, Interspecies Reviewers began serializing on the manga website Dragon Dragon Age in August 2016. The anime adaptation featured animation produced by Passione and began airing on Japanese cable channel AT-X in January 2020, with censored versions going up on other Japanese television stations soon afterwards. Along with these outlets, the series was also streamed outside of Japan by Funimation… at least for a little while.
While it feels fair to say that everyone had a vague idea of what they were getting into when this series started, no one expected it to go as far as it did in terms of content, which led to two Japanese networks dropping the series midway through its run. On January 31st, Funimation also stated that the series fell outside their standards and would no longer stream the series even after producing a dub for the first episode.
So for those of you who felt slighted or even cheated out of getting to see your sex comedy anime, now is your chance to own this piece of anime history.
