The hard-hitting ecchi battle series Ikki Tousen is returning to Japanese airwaves in 2022!
In a tweet sent out on Friday, July 2nd, the staff behind the Ikki Tousen anime account revealed that a brand new television anime adaptation of the spinoff, titled Shin Ikki Tousen, will air on the Japanese network AT-X in 2022. That automatically tells me that this adaptation will stay true to its roots and not be afraid to show off a healthy amount of fan service.

When I first watched Ikki Tousen a few years ago, I never would’ve thought that the series would have the legs that it does (if you’ll pardon the pun) but here we are, over 20 years after the launch of the original manga and the series is still going strong. That isn’t to say that this series is bad by any stretch of the imagination, it’s just that I never expected it to still be going at this point.
Originally a manga created by Yuji Shiozaki, Ikki Tousen first launched in the pages of Comic Gum magazine in April 2000 and ran until August 2015. It was eventually compiled in 24 volumes in Japan. The first time it was adapted into an anime was in 2003 when J.C. Staff produced a thirteen-episode first season, which was followed by a second and third season in 2007 and 2008 produced by studio Arms. In 2010, studio TNK produced a fourth season. In 2015, the original manga series ended but they launched a sequel in Young King OURs magazine starting in November of that year which is still running to this day.
Ikki Tousen is one show that has proven that fan service is something that can be used properly and effectively to create a lasting franchise with some serious chops (and punches and kicks)!
How many of you out there are fans and will tune in to the latest installment?
