Hollywood Adaptation of Made in Abyss in Early Stages

Made in Abyss is going Hollywood!

According to a report that was first posted by the entertainment website Deadline, a Hollywood adaptation is in the early stages of development at Columbia Pictures. Kevin McMullin will adapt the series for the big screen with Vertigo Entertainment and actor Masi Oka set to produce. No other details about the feature are available as of this writing.

Made in Abyss qualifies as one of the darkest moeblob series to ever be produced, particularly within the last few years. Originally a manga series created by Akihito Tsukushi, it’s been serialized in the online manga publication Web Comic Gamma since 2012 with nine volumes in print in Japan. The anime adaptation was produced by studio Kinema Citrus in 2017 and was followed by a sequel movie in 2020. A second television season will premiere in 2022.

In the series, the main character is an orphan girl named Riko who lives in a community that surrounds a deep, dark pit known as the abyss. Having lost her parents in the abyss, Riko decides to descend into the pit along with a friend named Reg in order to discover its secrets. Unfortunately, the further into the pit one travels, the worse the sickness they experience gets.

Made in Abyss is one of the most emotionally packed series of the last few years. No matter how prepared you think you are when you start this series, you’ll still be shocked by how dark this series gets by the end of the first season. Trust me when I say that you’ll want to have a large box of tissues handy for this one.

This announcement of a Hollywood adaptation joins the list of many other manga projects which are scheduled for production, including My Hero Academia, One Punch Man, Steins;Gate, and many others. Not that anyone actually wants any of these to be adapted by Hollywood.
