One of the cutest little cinnamon rolls in all of anime is returning in the second season of Gun Gale Online later this year! First revealed to be in production at the Dengeki Bunko 30th anniversary event in July 2023, the official X/Twitter account released a new Key Visual confirming four additional returning cast members and teasing that the series will premiere before the end of 2024.
While the exact premiere season has yet to be revealed, we can report that the main cast and crew will be returning to reprise their roles, including Tomori Kusunoki as LLENN, Yōko Hikasa as Pitohui, Chinatsu Akasaki as Fukaziroh, and Kazuyuki Okitsu as M. Also returning to reprise their roles are director Masayuki Sakoi as director, Yōsuke Kuroda as script supervisor, and Yoshio Kosakai as character designer. Studio 3Hz will produce the animation.
BACKGROUND
A spinoff from the mega-franchise Sword Art Online, Gun Gale Online has become its own franchise. Based on the Gun Gale Online arc, GGO first appeared as a light novel written by Keiichi Sigsawa and illustrated by Kouhaku Kuroboshi in 2014. In 2018, the series was adapted into a twelve-episode television series. Widespread praise came from fans and critics alike.
SYNOPSIS
This series has nothing to do with Kirito and Asuna. The main character is Karen Kohiruimaki, a six-foot-tall college student with a severe complex about her height. When she tries out virtual reality at her friend’s suggestion, she goes through game after game. But she gives up on them all when they keep making her tall, just like in real life. Finally, she comes across a game called Gun Gale Online, which gives her the cute, tiny avatar of her dreams.
Karen (or LLENN as she’s known in the game) develops a reputation as a ruthless player. She attacks others with little to no hesitation as she continues to play. Luckily, she meets another player named Pitohui, who likes her style, and the two become friends.
GGO was a fun series to watch back in 2018. I’m exceedingly happy to see it making a grand return with the same cast and crew that made the first season so loveable. I still encourage you to check out the first season if you’re not a fan of Sword Art Online. It’s filled with a-dork-able characters and action that will leave you on the edge of your seat. This is one of those hidden gems that too many have ignored because of its association with its source.
And if you discovered this series via your love for all things Sword Art Online, might I suggest checking out this awesome PS5 game available now from our store?
