Good news, the treasure hunting anime Golden Kamuy is back with a new season, a new animation studio, and some new crew. And along with a new teaser trailer and a new key visual, the long-standing adventure series is ready to continue the hunt.
It looks like Sugimoto and Asirpa are still working together as well as they can, and it’s honestly surprising how many times the series has used the “hand-hold for your life” trope in order for these two to get closer physically. But lucky for us, the only thing these two have on their minds besides not dying in the harsh northern weather is money.
Animation studio Brain’s Base is replacing Geno Studio, D-Frag! director Shizutaka Sugahara replaces previous director Hitoshi Nanba, and Takumi Yamakawa takes over as character designer from Kenichi Ohnuki.
The third season premiered in October of 2020, with Funimation streaming the English dub. Viz Media is localizing the English version of the manga, and the manga recently began its final arc in July. All in all, Golden Kamuy is a solid series where the change in animation studios and art styles actually improves the visuals and doesn’t come off as jarring, much like the change we’re seeing with the new second season of The Devil is a Part-Timer!! So far, the new season doesn’t have a release date, but new details will certainly be forthcoming in the new year.
For those who are unfamiliar with the plot of Golden Kamuy or just need a refresher, the story’s summary is as follows:
In the early twentieth century, Russo-Japanese War veteran Saichi “Immortal” Sugimoto scratches out a meager existence during the postwar gold rush in the wilderness of Hokkaido. When he stumbles across a map to a fortune in hidden Ainu gold, he sets off on a treacherous quest to find it. But Sugimoto is not the only interested party, and everyone who knows about the gold will kill to possess it! Faced with the harsh conditions of the northern wilderness, ruthless criminals and rogue Japanese soldiers, Sugimoto will need all his skills and luck — and the help of an Ainu girl named Asirpa — to survive.
