How can we mortals face the gods themselves? Divine weapons might help even the odds. However, without those, we can always try to outwit them. That’s where Gods’ Game We Play (Kami wa Game ni Ueteiru / God is Hungry for Games) comes into the picture. The gods are bored, and one of humanity’s best gamers takes them on in their games. We’ll see how these gamers fare in a match against the divine when this series premieres sometime in April 2024. Until then, let’s enjoy the trailer.
Kei Sazane first published his Gods’ Game We Play novel series on Kadokawa’s user-generated website, Kakuyomu, in September 2020. Media Factory later picked up the publishing rights and hired the artist Toiro Tomose to adapt the series to the light novel format. Seven novels have been published in the MF Bunko J imprint since January 25th, 2021.
The best gamer of his era, a former goddess, and a cute Apostle are as follows:
- Fay Theo Philus — Nobunaga Shimazaki (Mahito from Jujutsu Kaisen). One of the best gamers of his era takes a calm and analytical approach to any game set before him.
- Leoleshea — Akari Kito (Nezuko Kamado from Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba). A former dragon goddess who descended to Earth to play games. She teams with Fay to continue playing games against more powerful opponents.
- Pearl Diamond — Hina Tachibana (Shirori Katase from My Tiny Senpai). A fellow Apostle with the power to teleport herself and objects from one location to another. She is known for her beauty and kindness.
Liden Films has set up a home page and an official Twitter (X) page to promote Gods’ Game We Play. Series updates, behind-the-scenes information, and Key Visuals can be found there.
We Aim to Win These Gods’ Game We Play
The gods may not be playing for high stakes like in Yu-Gi-Oh!, but these games are no less tense. The titular deities of Gods’ Game We Play are bored with eternity, so they occasionally switch things up. The gods challenge select mortals to a series of games. However, the gods are, well, gods. Mortals don’t stand much of a chance, do they? So the gods bless these mortals with a gift known as “Arise.” Those with these blessings become Apostles and have superhuman or supernatural abilities, which levels the playing field during these games.
Leoleshea is one such game-loving god. She desires fun and challenging games so much that she reincarnated herself into a human, which cost her godhood. Despite that, she is still as powerful as the Dragon God she truly is. Leoleshea asked for the most skilled gamer of the era, which led her to Fay Theo Philus. He has already won some games against the gods, so she could not have found a better partner. Fay’s goal is to find the woman who taught him the love of games. As it just so happens, Leoleshea looks remarkably similar to her.
