Renako Amaori was a loner back in middle school. She decides to change her lot in life by making the most of high school. Renako will try her best to finally have fun in school. Her first friend happens to be a popular idol inside and out of school. However, something much more than friendship might be blooming between them. We’ll see how close they get when There’s No Freaking Way I’ll be Your Lover! Unless… (Watashi ga Koibito ni Nareru Wakenaijan, Muri Muri! Or shortened to*Muri Janakatta!?) premieres sometime in July 2025.
Teren Mikami and Eku Takeshima released the original There’s No Freaking Way I’ll be Your Lover! Unless… light novel on February 21st, 2020. Shueisha has since published six volumes in the Dash X Bunko imprint.
The unexpected couple and a big sister character are as follows:
- Renako Amaori — Kanna Nakamura (Narita Top Road in Uma Musume: Pretty Derby). A loner by nature who wants to enjoy a happy high school life.
- Mai Oduka — Saori Onishi (Yuki Sumi in Oshi no Ko). A popular girl who also performs as a model.
- Ajisai Sena — Yukari Anzai (Kotoka Saionji from The Idolmaster Cinderella Girls). An elder sister with charming brown hair.

I Just Wanted a Friend! There’s No Freaking Way I’ll be Your Lover! Unless…
Renako Amaori was an introverted loner back in middle school. She wants her high school debut to be different. Renako tries her best to be a more outgoing person with plenty of friends right from the first day. She approaches her idol seatmate and asks to be friends. Mai Oduka is a kind and popular model who has even appeared in magazines. Their friendship starts from the first word.
Try as she might, Renako can’t keep up the act. She catches her second wind alone on the roof. Mai finds her there slumped over the guard rail and assumes Renako plans to jump. The two fall off the roof and land in a nearby tree. It’s there that they confess their worries and become great friends. Mai meets Renako on the roof the following day and confesses that she wants to be more than just friends. Renako becomes flustered at the idea of being girlfriends but Mai insists that they are soulmates.
