A great elder informed a young witch of her eventual fate just as she turned seventeen. The witch Meg is fated to die within a year if she doesn’t break the curse. There’s still hope, but Meg must leave home and go on a journey. We’ll see how she does when Once Upon a Witch’s Death (Aru Majo ga Shinu Made) premieres sometime in 2025.
Saka published the original Once Upon a Witch’s Death novel on Kakuyomu between October 3rd, 2019, and August 26th, 2022. ASCII Media Works picked up the rights and hired the artist Chorefuji to adapt the series to a light novel format. The Dengeki no Shin Bungei imprint published one volume on December 17th, 2021. The manga adaptation first appeared on March 10th, 2023, with the artist Kenu Amearare at the helm. One volume is available in Dengeki Comic Regulus.
Our cute witch and her wise teacher are as follows:
- Meg Raspberry — Yoshino Aoyama (Hitori Goto from Bocchi the Rock!). A young witch who has a curse to die within a year.
- Faust — Yoshiko Sakakibara (Prime Minister Yoko Kayabuki from Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex 2nd GIG). Meg’s teacher and guide on her path to overcome the curse.

Her Journey Begins Once Upon a Witch’s Death
Meg is an energetic and headstrong apprentice witch. Her teacher, the Eternal Witch Faust, delivered a painful gift upon her seventeenth birthday. Meg has a curse and is fated to die in one year. Her dreams seemed to crumble before her very eyes. However, Faust offered her hope. As a long-lived and powerful witch, Faust knows of this curse and the method to break it.
Meg must collect one thousand “tears of joy” from the people she helps. She must spread joy to those around her. This requires Meg to leave home and go on a journey. In so doing, she can create a “seed of life” to lift her death sentence. Meg’s journey will be precarious, and she should use her magic to share the burdens and triumphs of those she meets. This will certainly teach her the value of life and the precious moments we all share.
