Funimation has been doing some good work as of late. Not only are they still producing those sweet simuldubs, but then they go and quietly drop an announcement like this on their official blog as though it’s no big deal.
On Monday, September 14th, Funimation revealed that they will release the blockbuster Kyoto Animation series Violet Evergarden to home video before the end of 2020! This will not be some cheap, bargain bin release either, this is going to be a super special collector’s edition which will include some nifty extras such as:
- A rigid box and slipcover featuring art from the series.
- Four art cards featuring cover art from the Japanese release of the series.
- A 200-page Violet Evergarden art book.
- An adorable sticker sheet.
We don’t know the exact release date or what this bundle of goodness will retail for, but those details should come soon on the official Funimation blog.
Violet Evergarden started as a light novel series penned by Kana Akatsuki and illustrated by Akiko Takase, which was entered into the annual Kyoto Animation awards, where it took home the grand prize in 2014. It was the first entry to ever be awarded the grand prize in any category. The thirteen-episode anime adaptation premiered in January 2018, with animation produced by Kyoto Animation. Taichi Ishidate served as director and scripts were written by Reiko Yoshida.
The Violet Evergarden movie will be released to Japanese theaters starting September 18th, 2020.
Delayed twice, it was originally supposed to hit theaters in January 2020 but was delayed because of the studio having to recover from the July 2019 arson attack. The new premiere date had the movie premiering in April 2020, but it was delayed once again, this time due to concerns with COVID-19.
The series was streamed worldwide by Netflix who describes the story as:
The war is over, and Violet Evergarden needs a job. Scarred and emotionless, she takes a job as a letter writer to understand herself and her past.
