One series from the spring 2020 anime season that I really enjoyed but felt was very underappreciated was Arte. A period dramedy that features a young girl in 16th century Italy who just wants to become an artist but is turned away by everyone because of her gender.
However, despite the series being a rather good production by studio Seven Arcs with Takayuki Hamana sitting in the director’s chair, Reiko Yoshida handling the scripts, and Goro Ito handling the background music, it never seemed to latch on with fans and so I didn’t expect it to be placed very high on the ‘dub’ priority list by Funimation. Sometimes it’s fun to be proven wrong though.
In an announcement posted to their official blog on Friday, October 9th, Funimation revealed the voices who will bring the animation to life in a whole new way. Here is the full cast and crew list as posted on the blog:
ADR Director – Marissa Lenti
Assistant ADR Director – Amber Lee Connors
ADR Script Supervisor – Bonny Clinkenbeard
ADR Writer – Clayton Browning
Arte – Felecia Angelle
Leo – Gianni Matragrano
Angelo – Wayne Grayson
Master Danilo – Jim Foronda
Narrator – Gianni Matragrano
Arte’s Mother – Dorothy Fahn
Arte’s Father – David Wald

Leo’s Master – Steven Kelly
Based on the manga titled Arte, created by Kei Okubo, this series is very different from what we’re used to, meaning that it’s not a school series nor is it an isekai. Instead, this is a period piece taking place in the Renaissance era of Italy with a female lead from a noble family who just wants to become an artist. Unfortunately, in this era, art is a man’s profession which means that our leading lady, cleverly named Arte, will face resistance, discrimination, and persecution every step of the way, but she still pushes forward towards her dream with a positive attitude.
