Two beloved and heartwarming anime series are making their grand return! Frieren and Tanya show fans the delightful journey of friendship and the power of mercy. Nope, that’s a lie. Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End is about an immortal elf who realizes too late that humans can die from old age. The Saga of Tanya the Evil is an isekai where a cute girl wages a merciless campaign of battle and bloodshed. Both series are set to return in 2026, though Tanya will come in a different form.
Frieren

Let’s start with our melancholic elf girl. Kanehito Yamada and Tsukasa Abe released the original Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End (Soso no Frieren) on April 28th, 2020. Shogakukan has since published thirteen volumes in Weekly Shonen Sunday. Studio Madhouse’s anime adaptation premiered on September 29th, 2023. Season 2 will premiere on January 1st, 2026. It’s unknown which arcs this season will cover, but Season 1 ended with the First-Class Mage Exam (Final Stage) arc.
Frieren is a magical elf girl who traveled with the great hero Himmel to slay the demon king and save the world. Her longevity affects her perception of time, so her decade of travel seemed fleeting. The party reunited 50 years later for an event when Himmel peacefully passed on. Frieren then realized she missed her chance to speak with him properly, so she set out to find his spirit.
Tanya
Let’s discuss the maniacal isekai genderswap girl. Carlo Zen (pseudonym) and Shinobu Shinotsuki released the original The Saga of Tanya the Evil (Youjo Senki) light novel on October 31st, 2013. Enterbrain has since published fourteen volumes. Studio NUT’s anime adaptation premiered on January 6th, 2017. A misunderstanding caused recent reports about The Saga of Tanya the Evil Season 2. Dong Chang, one of the animators, recently discussed a documentary about the making of Season 2. You can see the video and time stamp below.
Dong Chang further confirmed the documentary in a community post. The Saga of Tanya the Evil Season 2 is all but confirmed. But it’s the documentary coming in 2026 and not Season 2 itself.
Tanya is an orphan in a country that strongly resembles Germany during World War I. She was previously a ruthlessly efficient Japanese salaryman who did not believe in God. Well, God didn’t like that. So, he places the salaryman in a dangerous situation and declares that if Tanya does not call upon Him for help or dies an unnatural death, her soul will leave the cycle of reincarnation and face condemnation to hell. Tanya must now rise through the military ranks and get a cushy position far from battle.
Frieren and Tanya are coming back in 2026, though not in the same manner. Will you watch both series when they come back? Who do you think would win in a fight? Which one is the Best Girl? Let us know in the comments below.
