Um, hoo boy… remember a few days ago when I reported that the Rebuild of Evangelion movies were all going to be re-screened in Japan this December and speculated that the re-releases could lead up to the premiere date announcement of the final rebuild movie? Yeah, seems that Studio Khara couldn’t wait that long because on Thursday, October 15th, they just casually dropped the new release date and the first trailer.
The final Rebuild of Evangelion movie, which is titled Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time was originally scheduled to be released in June 2020 but was delayed due to the worldwide pandemic causing production issues. We can now confirm that they will release the final movie to theaters in Japan on January 23rd, 2021.
It has been a very long road for Neon Genesis Evangelion and it’s kind of amazing to me that I’m going to see it take its final bow (this is its final bow, right?) at the perfect time. Let’s face it, 2020 has not been a kind year to anyone, and what better way to start a fresh new year than with the final movie of one of the most famous anime franchise to ever be created.
From its humble beginnings as a revolutionary television series back in the 1990s to spawning thousands of think pieces from fans around the world over the course of multiple decades is astounding to think about. I make no secret that while I didn’t enjoy the original television series at the time that I saw it, I want to go back and try again now that I have more life experience.
As I’ve said before though, it’s been a very long road for this franchise and fans have been waiting quite a while for this final movie. Let’s hope that it can live up to the hopes, dreams, and expectations of audiences around the world.
