It seems that lightning has indeed struck again for manga author Hiro Mashima as the anime adaptation of his latest series, Edens Zero, has been green-lit for a second season!
Unfortunately, no other details were revealed in the announcement such as who will replace the director of the first season, Yūji Suzuki, who sadly passed away in September 2021 before the conclusion of the first season. Stay tuned to the J-List Blog for more information as it is released to the public.
As mentioned, Edens Zero is the latest hit manga from author Hiro Mashima who had previously succeeded with Rave Master and Fairy Tail. This series first began running in 2018 in Kodansha’s Weekly Shonen Magazine (which was recently in the news thanks to another big series of theirs coming to an end) and was announced as green-lit for an anime adaptation in 2020. The manga series has been collected in eighteen volumes in Japan as of November 2021 and fourteen digital volumes as of December 2021 (the print edition hit shelves in January 2022) in English.
The first season of the anime adaptation was produced by J.C. Staff aired in Japan from April to October 2021. Unfortunately for fans in the west, the series was licensed by Netflix and thus sat in jail for a short time before premiering outside Japan in late August 2021.
In the science-fantasy story, the main character is a young girl named Shiki Granbell who has spent her entire life being raised in an abandoned theme park by a group of robots. Until one day, when the park is visited by two new characters, Rebecca Bluegarden and her robot cat, Happy. After the robots turn hostile towards them, they escape off the planet on a spaceship and register as adventurers, starting their time together as friends and partners on a grand quest that will take them all across the stars.
