Sad news for those of us who like to score good deals on our pornography as eBay has announced via their website that they will no longer allow the sale of most adult goods. This includes “sexually explicit anime, comics, books, films, animation, manga, hentai, yaoi”. The announcement was first reported last week, which caused something of an uproar online with many creators and fans condemning the move.
The change will begin gradually but move very quickly, with the full ban taking effect on June 15th. At that point, the ‘Adults Only’ category will be removed from the site. Leading up to that point, they revealed that no new listings for the category will be allowed and any existing listings which are ‘good until canceled’ will be automatically canceled at their next renewal date. “Safety” is being touted by eBay as the reason for the move.
It’s worth noting that eBay still allows some adult items, including soft pornographic magazines such as Playboy and Penthouse, so long as there is no nudity or sexual content within the listing itself. They will continue to allow the sale of adult toys by approved sellers, so long as their products are unused and in their original, sealed packaging.
This may be one of the most asinine decisions eBay has ever made. It’s only magnified when you consider how many horrible products they allow on their site every single day that push genuinely horrible views and ideas. I will always be in favor of pornography being available to adults who appreciate it. This decision is only going to push customers off their site, much like what happened with Tumblr when they disallowed pornography. The move pushed artists and creators to other sites.
Ed’s Note: Never fear, Your Friend in Japan has no such silly plans to stop serving the adult products you enjoy. You can find plenty of adult products, from Japan, on our web store.
