Pretty Boy Detective Club is one of those shows that I was super excited about watching. I even included it on my list of reasons to be excited about 2021! However, once the spring season rolled around, I found myself swamped with work and never actually got around to adding it to my weekly anime queue. Luckily for me, Aniplex of America and Funimation are giving us a second chance to check it out by announcing the premiere of the English dub!
That’s right, not only is Vivy – Flourite Eye’s Song – getting an English dub on Saturday, May 29th, but Pretty Boy Detective Club is also launching their English dub on the same day!
This mystery series comes from beloved studio SHAFT, famed Monogatari author Nisioisin, and immensely talented veteran director Akiyuki Simbo. The story begins with a girl named Mayumi Dojima who wishes to find a star that she only saw once, a decade ago. So she decides to visit the Pretty Boy Detective Club and hire them to find the lost star.
The English cast for the series will be filled out as follows (character names first):
Voice Director: Tony Oliver
Writer: Marlan Moore
Mayumi Dojima: Suzie Yeung
Manabu Sotouin: Griffin Burns
Nagahiro Sakiguchi: Howard Wang
Michiru Fukuroi: Alejandro Saab
Hyota Ashikaga: Caleb Yen
Sosaku Yubiwa: Brian Timothy Anderson
Rei: Amber Lee Connors
Lai Fudatsuki: Todd Haberkorn
Originally a mystery novel series, Pretty Boy Detective Club ran for twelve volumes in Japan from October 2015 to May 2021. It received a manga adaptation which began serializing in shoujo manga magazine Aria in April 2016. After the magazine ceased publication, the series was moved to Shonen Magazine Edge from October 2018 to July 2019. It was collected in five volumes in Japan.
Both the novels and manga are available in English, licensed by Kodansha USA, though only the first three volumes of the novel series have been released as of April 2021. The first two volumes of the manga will be released in July 2021. As mentioned, the anime adaptation is animated by studio SHAFT, with Akiyuki Simbo directing and Yukito Kizawa handling the scripts.
