Dragon Quest continues to expand and grow with every passing moment. The legendary Japanese RPG franchise has become a somewhat major hit overseas in recent years thanks to the success of Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age, but in Japan this JRPG franchise is easily the most influential and well-known video game series to date. With popularity like that, it’s no surprise that so many spinoffs, adaptations, tie-ins and merchandise deals seem to sprout out for the legendary game series all the time. One of the most recently revealed entries in the series is Dragon Quest Tact, a smartphone game that puts a tactical spin on the world of Dragon Quest. We never got a concrete release date for the game when it was revealed back in February, but now the official website for the game has confirmed that it’s arriving in Japan this month, on July 16th.
As the name of the game implies, this upcoming mobile spinoff of the revered JRPG franchise is actually a tactical roleplaying game. In the game, players are tasked with commanding an army of iconic monsters from the original series in a variety of tactical battles. The game features a turn-based command battle system and square-based maps that will surely be familiar to anyone who’s a fan of tactical RPGs like Fire Emblem, Final Fantasy Tactics, or Tactics Ogre. When opposing monsters meet on the map, they do battle.
Dragon Quest Tact is set to be a free-to-play game on iOS and Android. Like any other mobile game, there will be a variety of in-app purchases available to enhance or expedite your experience. The game is being developed by Aiming, while Square Enix is in charge of planning and production for the game. Yuji Horii, the creator of the entire Dragon Quest series, is on board as the general director for the game. Akira Toriyama, the legendary Dragon Quest character designer who’s also known for creating Dragon Ball and Dr. Slump, will also be returning to the game to design characters. Furthermore, long-time Dragon Quest music composer Koichi Sugiyama, who is most recently credited with work on Dragon Quest Your Story and Dragon Quest: Dai no Daibōken, will be composing music for Dragon Quest Tact.
