News is pouring out in a steady stream for upcoming sci-fi anime Deca-Dence. The series was initially announced in July of 2019, but not much info on the series surfaced after that initial announcement. Now, with the television anime ready to hit the airwaves, we’re getting plenty of new info on the exciting new show from the mind of Mob Psycho 100 and Death Parade director Yuzuru Tachikawa. Funimation recently announced that they would be streaming the series on their platforms this summer. Now, Funimation and the official website for Deca-Dence have revealed a wealth of new info for the gorgeous new anime series that helps us learn who’s involved and what it’s all about.
For starters, we have an official synopsis of Deca-Dence straight from the Funimation blog:
Many years have passed since humanity was driven to the brink of extinction by the sudden emergence of the unknown life forms Gadoll. Those humans that survived now dwell in a 3000 meter-high mobile fortress Deca-dence built to protect themselves from the Gadoll threat.
Denizens of Deca-dence fall into two categories: Gears, warriors who fight the Gadoll daily, and Tankers, those without the skills to fight. One day, Natsume, a Tanker girl who dreams of becoming a Gear meets surly Kaburagi, an armor repairman of Deca-dence.
This chance meeting between the seemingly two opposites, the girl with a positive attitude who never gives up on her dreams and the realist who has given up on his, will eventually shake the future course of this world.
That girl with a positive attitude is Natsume, voiced by Tomori Kusunoki. She’s one half of the main duo driving Deca-Dence forward, and she’s described as cheerful, energetic, and reckless. After losing her father and her right arm in a Gadoll attack as a child, she’s dreamed of joining the Kanoechikara in order to become a warrior and fight the Gadoll. Unfortunately, her current lot in life finds her stuck working as an armor repairer for Kaburagi.
Kaburagi, voiced by Katsuyuki Konishi, is the other central protagonist of Deca-Dence. He’s a blunt and surly man who used to be a great warrior, but currently lives his days quietly as an armor repairer after losing the will to continue fighting. When he runs into Natsume and sees that she’s never given up on her dream to fight, though, it ignites a fire within him once more.
Alongside the main voice actors, it was also revealed that Konomi Suzuki will be performing the opening theme song for Deca-Dence, titled “Theater of Life.” Kashitaro Ito, meanwhile, is performing the ending song “Kioku no Hakobune” (Ark of Memories).
