Finding love after moving abroad is a common rom-com trope. It’s a perfect trope to explore in Okinawa de Suki ni Natta Ko ga Hogen Sugite Tsurasugiru (The Dialect of the Girl I Fell in Love With in Okinawa is Too Difficult to Deal With). A guy moves from Tokyo to Okinawa and meets a cute girl. Unfortunately for him, she has a thick Okinawan accent. We’ll see how he does when this anime series premieres sometime in January 2025. Whether he gets the girl or not, he’ll learn about Okinawa.
Egumi Sora released the original Okinawa de Suki ni Natta manga series on January 10th, 2020. Shinchosha has published eight volumes in Kurage Bunch.
Our new transfer student and two Okinawan natives are as follows:
- Teruaki Nakamura — Takeo Otsuka (Aquamarine Hoshino in Oshi no Ko). A transfer student who moved from Tokyo to Okinawa. He has a crush on Hina but can’t understand her Okinawan dialect.
- Hina Kyan — Akari Kito (Seiun Sky from Uma Musume Pretty Derby). A cute and energetic Okinawan girl who gets along with Teruaki.
- Kana Higa — Fairouz Ai (Power from Chainsaw Man). Kana translates Hina’s sentences for Teruaki while hiding her feelings for him.

Learn About a New Land with Cute Girls in Okinawa de Suki ni Natta
Teruaki Nakamura moved from Tokyo to the island of Okinawa in the spring. He became fast friends with Hina Kyan and Kana Higa, two cute local girls. Teruaki formed a crush on Hina, but her Okinawan accent and dialect made it impossible for him to understand most of what she told him. It’s fortunate then that her friend Kana Higa is nearby to translate for her. The three spend time together since they attend the same school and classroom.
Hina and Kana are happy to explain Okinawan culture to Teruaki, including food-offering customs and how laid-back people can be. He takes all of this in stride while pining for Hina. Unbeknownst to him, Kana harbors a crush on Teruaki. It’s in this sort of rom-com situation where Teruaki learns about the fun-loving and generous people of Okinawa.
