With a heavy heart, it was announced on the official Twitter account of Berserk that the author, Kentarou Miura, had passed away on May 6th, due to acute aortic dissection. He was 54.
The post also stated that there will be an official announcement in the Young Animal Magazine and on the official website as soon as the family and Young Animal Magazine are ready.
Miura’s popular series, Berserk, was initially launched in Hakusensha’s Monthly Anime House Magazine in 1989 and has been to this day. The series has published over 40 million copies. The manga had inspired a 25-episode anime adaptation in 1997 and an anime film trilogy from 2012 to 2013. The series later received a 24-episode sequel adaptation in 2016, and another 24-episode season in 2017.

Berserk has been acclaimed by fans for its mature, dark, anime action, with fans often stating online that Guts, the main character of the series, is the one and only true Black Swordsman. For many fans, this was their first anime series, which helped them get into anime. It is saddening to hear that the community has lost such an amazing and influential author. His Berserk series was said to be a big inspiration to the popular game series Dark Souls, and more besides.
Our deepest condolences to the family, friends, and those close to Miura-sensei. We hope that his works will stay in the hearts of his fans forever.
Berserk is described as:
Guts, a superhumanly strong warrior who wields a large sword, as he wanders a dark medieval world filled with demons, corrupt and decadent nobles, and other horrors. Every night, he is assailed by demons, attracted to the curse branded on him after a traumatic event. He makes his way through the world on a quest to slay a former friend turned demon, who took everything away from him.
