Anime fans must once again come together to mourn another’s tragic passing. Emi Shinohara sadly passed away on September 8th, 2024, at the young age of 61. She leaves behind her husband, fellow actor Hiroshi Watari, and son. Her son took to her official Twitter (X) page to announce her unfortunate passing. In keeping with her wishes, he did not disclose her illness. He instead relayed that she was lively and happy in the face of her illness.
Let us celebrate her life and her eternal impact on anime and culture.
Emi Shinohara Lives on in Her Work
Emiko Shinohara was born on August 8th, 1963, in Fukushima Prefecture but was raised in Ueda, Nagano. She showed an interest in the arts when she joined drama clubs and choirs during elementary school. Her dreams of becoming an actress solidified during her junior high school years.
Emi began her storied career in 1986. Her first roles that year were as Elizabeth from Dream Hunter Rem and B-Ko Daitokuji from Project A-Ko. To go through her entire body of work could be its own article. You’d be hard-pressed to find a character that isn’t beloved, such was her impact on anime.
Emi’s vocal range was quite extensive. She has voiced Tennyo Masaki from Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Ohki. Tennyo is a human / Juraian / Airai hybrid and Tenchi’s older sister who looks very similar to their mother, Kiyone. She is a light-hearted and intelligent woman who couldn’t bear to make Tenchi worry too much after being compelled to pretend to be their mother.
Misuzu Misaka from Toaru Majutsu no Index is Mikoto’s mother. She is the opposite of her more famous daughter. Misuzu has a more laid-back and fun-loving attitude than Mikoto’s more serious demeanor. She also has a more mature figure than Mikoto’s slimmer build, which Misuzu likes to flaunt in cute clothes while stoking her daughter’s jealousy.
Both those beloved characters are opposite of Maria-sama ga Miteru’s Yoko Mizuno. Yoko is usually calm and reserved, with a sly smirk hiding her secret, mostly benevolent intentions.
A Ninja and a Guardian
The two roles that immediately jump to our minds when we think about Emi Shinohara are Kushina Uzumaki from Naruto and Makoto Kino / Sailor Jupiter from Sailor Moon. Toshiyuki Morikawa — who portrayed Kushina’s husband, Minato Namikaze — posted a tribute to her on his Twitter (X) page. He mentions a specific scene in the anime, and we can debate which scene he meant. Kushina died before the series began, but her actions have left a lasting effect on the story. She appeared when Naruto needed her most and offered him words of encouragement. The shinobi world will never forget the Red Hot-Blooded Habanero, nor will we.
Sailor Jupiter takes center stage in Sailor Moon more than Kushina appears in Naruto. That’s why we can hear more of Emi’s voice work. She had been voicing Makoto Kino since 1992, a testament to her skill and the popularity of Naoko Takeuchi’s legendary franchise. Makoto is the tomboy of the group, the tallest girl there who happily dances with Ami. Her time as Sailor Jupiter truly exemplified Emi Shinohara’s legacy.
As her son said, Emi will live on forever with her work. So, let’s take the time to watch some of her anime. I’d recommend some classic Sailor Moon.
