The new powerful-warrior-lives-a-slow-life anime will soon premiere! The Banished Former Hero Lives as He Pleases is an apt title for the story we should expect to see. A legendary hero laid down his life to save the world. The goddess wept over his body and reincarnated him. However, he didn’t get a new power, so his father banished him from home. In truth, he retained his former powers and memories. He’s okay with this because he wants to live a pleasing, slow life for once. We’ll see how his plans unfold when the series begins sometime in April 2024. Until then, let’s enjoy the new trailer.
Shin Kozuki posted his The Banished Former Hero Lives as He Pleases novel to the user-generated website Shosetsuka ni Naro between January 26th, 2018, and June 10th, 2019. TO Books obtained the publishing rights later and hired the artist Chocoan to adapt the series to a light novel. On October 10th, 2018, six volumes have been published in the TO Bunko imprint.
Our reincarnated hero and three potential Best Girls are as follows:
- Allen — Shouta Aoi (Cagliostro from Symphogear AXZ). A reincarnated legendary hero. His new father banished him after discovering his lack of a divine gift. Allen would prefer a drama-free life anyway.
- Riese — Minami Kurisaka (Yuki Kawanaka from Rent-A-Girlfriend). A princess and Allen’s former fiancée. Riese would not abandon him even after his exile.
- Anriette — Akari Kito (Nezuko Kamado from Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba). A noblewoman from a neighboring country who seems to know about Allen’s previous life. She’s possibly a tsundere.
- Noel — Sora Amamiya (Illustrious in Azur Lane). A peerless elven blacksmith. Noel is close friends with Riese.
Studio Deen and Studio Deen have maintained a home page and a Twitter (X) page to promote The Banished Former Hero Lives as He Pleases. You can find additional series information and Key Visuals there.
The Former Hero Chooses a Slow Life
There has been a growing hero-moves-to-the-countryside-to-live-a-slow-life trend in sword and sorcery anime. It’s a nice change of pace from the “hero must fight and sacrifice everything to save the world” genre of anime we’ve gotten for decades. As Joe called it, it’s the Slow Life, Hot Wife formula. The Strongest Tank’s Labyrinth Raids, Banished from the Hero’s Party, The Banished Former Hero Lives as He Pleases, and Chillin’ in Another World with Level 2 Super Cheat Powers have these themes. A kindhearted and idealistic person is royally cheated and banished from his home. This curse becomes a blessing, and they end up in a better position than the so-called heroes who cheated them.
This genre of anime, manga, and novels appeals to many people. Sure, we like the grandiose adventures where the hero party ventures out to fight the Demon King. However, nothing quite beats living a peaceful life with a cute girl (or two or more) by your side. It’s low stakes when getting a permit to open a business is the daunting quest the hero faces. There are some fights (it’s a sword and sorcery world, after all), but there’s no world-ending conflict. If an exhausted otaku needs a fun anime to unwind, they should choose the slow life.
