Alice Gear Aegis Expansion, an anime adaptation of the popular mobile game Alice Gear Aegis, is set to premiere sometime in April 2023. Ahead of that anticipated release window, studio Nomad has released the first five minutes of the first episode, giving fans a look at an action-packed space battle, followed by a fangirl trying to join her heroes.
A home page and official Twitter account for Alice Gear Aegis Expansion were also set up for fans to follow for further updates and more details about the greater universe of the anime series. Character art and key visuals are there also, such as the key art below.
Alice Gear Aegis Expansion seems to fit within the established canon of Alice Gear Aegis. But at least one anime original character, Nodoka Takahata, appears to be a focus character as viewers follow her as she tracks down Narikosaka Works. Nodoka wants to join them and eventually meet with Yotsuyu Hirasaka, a powerful Actress and her idol. Women who use Alice Gear, powerful high-dimensional weapons capable of striking down Weiss, are called Actresses. Given their idol status in the world, the term fits.
The trailer begins with an action-packed space battle scene where Yotsuyu Hirasaka works with Kaede Agatsuma to destroy a massive Weiss enemy. While this may set a more serious tone, something akin to a Gundam series, it seems to dissolve into comedic gags right after, as indicated by Sitara Kaneshiya finding different poses when playing her mobile game and Nodoka’s funny faces and poses as she speaks with Sitara and Fumika Momoshina.
The Alice Gear Aegis universe sees humanity pushed to the brink of extinction by the Weiss, mechanical lifeforms that drove humans from their home, planet Earth. In response to the threat, humankind developed Alice Gear, a high-dimensional weapon system, to combat and destroy Weiss. However, only women could wield Alice Gear, and these heroines became known as Actresses. Under the supervision of AEGiS, private companies formed to work with Actresses as they flew through the stars to fight the Weiss.
For those new to the series, and as was stated in the beginning, Alice Gear Aegis Expansion is an anime adaptation of the popular gacha mobile game Alice Gear Aegis. Developed by Pyramid and published by Colopl, who uploaded the five-minute preview to YouTube, the characters were designed by Fumikane Shimada, and the mechs were designed by Kanetake Ebikawa and Takayuki Yanase.
The original Alice Gear Aegis was released on January 22nd, 2018, to great acclaim. An OVA titled Alice Gear Aegis: Doki! Actress Darake no Mermaid Grand Prix, the first anime adaptation, was also produced by Nomad and premiered on September 15th, 2021. Fans of the OVA should feel comforted knowing that Nomad is back, along with the director Hirokazu Hanai and character designer Rikiya Okano. But scriptwriter Kenji Sugihara replaced Masahiro Okubo.
For those looking for a console version of Alice Gear Aegis, Alice Gear Aegis CS: Concerto of Simulatrix was released in Japan on September 8th, 2022, and a worldwide release is planned for sometime in 2023.
