The beloved historical series returns to amaze a new generation. The Rose of Versailles follows different people as they navigate French high society and its collapse during the French Revolution. People will form and break friendships as they breathe their last. We’ll reunite with these noblemen and soldiers when the movie hits theaters sometime in Spring 2025.
Riyoko Ikeda released her original The Rose of Versailles manga series between May 21st, 1972, and December 23rd, 1973. The series continued from April 20th, 2013, to February 5th, 2018. Two of our leading ladies are as follows:
- Marie Antoinette — Aya Hirano (Menchi from Hunter × Hunter). The crown princess of France and Oscar’s friend. A kind yet spoiled girl, her actions set history alight.
- Oscar François de Jarjayes — Miyuki Sawashiro (Raiden Shogun/Raiden Ei from Genshin Impact). The female Captain of the Royal Guards and Marie’s friend. Her duties to the royal family and loyalty to her people conflict during her time at Marie’s side.
Studio MAPPA has maintained a home page, a YouTube channel, an Instagram page, and a Twitter (X) page to promote The Rose of Versailles. You can find more information about the series and the key visuals there. It shows Marie and Oscar during much happier times.
The Beautiful Flowers of France, The Rose of Versailles
Marie and Oscar’s tale happens before and during the French Revolution (1789–1799). The Empress of Austria seeks to solidify an alliance with France, so she arranges for her daughter to wed the crown prince of France, Louis XVI. Marie Antoinette is a kind yet spoiled girl, but French high society swept her up.
Oscar François de Jarjayes is the youngest girl in her family, and she only has sisters. Her father hoped for a male heir to inherit his military position, so Oscar’s family raised her to act and train as a boy. She would rise through the ranks to become the Captain of the Royal Guards. It assigns Oscar to protect Marie, and the two become fast friends. However, Marie doesn’t keep the best company. And her spoiled nature leads to many tragedies. Oscar must decide if she wishes to protect the French nobility or the commoners.
