Many people genuinely fear that a doctor or nurse might switch their child at birth by not paying attention. It’s incredibly rare, especially with modern technology, but it does happen. As rare as it is, the phenomenon makes for some wholesome rom-com in stories. For instance, someone switches a boy and a girl at birth. Years later, their families reconnect and insist that the two marry to unite both households. Since their meeting, other girls have appeared, vying for the wayward son’s attention. We’ll see if the families unite when A Couple of Cuckoos (Cuckoo no Iinazuke) Season 2 premieres on July 8th, 2025.
Miki Yoshikawa released the original A Couple of Cuckoos manga series on January 29th, 2020. Kodansha has since published 28 volumes in Weekly Shonen Magazine. Shin-Ei Animation and SynergySP’s anime adaptation premiered on April 24th, 2022.
The two who were switched, and one of the love rivals, are as follows:
- Nagi Umino — Kaito Ishikawa (Karaku from Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba). A studious second-year student at Megurogawa Academy. His feelings towards the girls are confused.
- Erika Amano — Akari Kito (Seiun Sky from Uma Musume Pretty Derby). A famous social media influencer and second-year student at Orpheus Girls’ Academy.
- Ai Mochizuki — Hina Yomiya (Shinju Inui from My Dress-Up Darling). Nagi’s childhood friend and a popular online singer. She is desperately in love with Nagi.

A Couple of Cuckoos Pushed Together by Fate
The Umino and Amano families brought new lives into the world at the same time. An accident at the hospital switched a son and daughter for the next sixteen years. The families connected and hatched a scheme to resolve their situation: the son and daughter must wed to unite the families. Nagi and Erika — the swapped children in question — met ahead of time and pretended to be dating to get out of a forced marriage. They instead only made things worse.
As their relationship developed and hit a few bumps, more girls appeared with claims to Nagi’s heart. Nagi’s rival with a red string of fate already linked to someone else, a childhood friend who returned from China, and even his adopted sibling. Erika has her own confused emotions, as she had searched for Nagi’s older brother. Things come to a head when a school event’s legend states that two winners will definitely get married.
