Eve and Aoi play their brand of golf in match play. They soon realize how tough their competitors will be to beat.
Episode 13 – “I Think Who Gets What Room Is Very Important for Girls”
Hmm.
First, the big news for BIRDIE WING: We’ve only watched the first half! The producers announced the golf girls’ story continues in January 2023. Check out the video preview for what Bandai Namco calls “Season 2.”
The trailer reinforces the foreshadowing scenes we saw in this episode. The theme for the second half of BIRDIE WING will be about the fathers’ sins. That’s a narrative we often see in anime, where the next generation pays for the mistakes of the former one. Naruto and Bleach saw their heroes dropped into a multigenerational battle. There’s a similar thing happening between the Amawashi family and the rest of the world of golf. Cute girls cutely playing golf was never going to be on the schedule when Eve arrived in Japan.
The first part of BIRDIE WING was Eve’s gritty gangster backstory, which added to her mystique as the surprise transfer student into an all-girls school. But it was not Eve’s origin story. Remember that Eve can’t remember it! She’s an amnesiac after someone blew up the car that she was in. Eve’s part in the generational battle for the soul of golf, or whatever the outrageous circumstances I expect from BIRDIE WING are, will also include her family history.
Catherine briefly shows up in the second half trailer, so I’m sure the resolution of the golf girls’ story will combine the mob elements from Nafrece with the Japanese golf conglomerates. I hope we see more exciting sci-fi villainy because Catherine can’t be the only one with a Golf Death Star. There must be a golf robot army below the golf resorts of Japan. The second half of BIRDIE WING can’t come fast enough for me. Book your tee time for the Winter 2023 anime season!
Heh.
Uh oh. Amane didn’t like how Eve drew so much attention in the hotel lobby. Coach Reiya doesn’t mind. The other schools were going to hate them anyway. Aoi is the daughter of the sponsor’s CEO, so Raiou was already the top target. Oho! Eve kissed Aoi! On the cheek. BIRDIE WING makes those yuri (lily flowers) bloom! Amane says this is Japan, not Nafrece. No kissing in front of reporters!
The Raiou Academy golf ball logo is featured at the end of the opening credits. Both Raiou and Nada pairs had a bye on the first round of match play. Kaede’s concern is beating Raiou. Meanwhile, Amane’s concern is Aoi avoid night kisses from Eve! Players are supposed to room together, but Amane won’t allow it. Eve likes teasing Aoi, but Ichina worries the blonde girl will get stabbed. Hey, that already almost happened in BIRDIE WING! Har. Kinue tried to get into Coach Reiya’s room. So thirsty!
Amane slept well, but Ichina did not. What happened? Ooh. BIRDIE WING gives feet fans a midnight snack. Eve likes it rough in bed! The yuri flows strongly through Amane’s mind. Koran Academy’s golf coach looks like he also had a tough night. Or a rougher decade? Akihiro Date is already day drinking. He and Coach Reiya are old buddies. That’s how Reiya maneuvered Kaoruko into playing putt-putt golf with Eve. Akihiro is skeptical of Reiya’s confidence in Raiou’s chances to win the tournament. He cites the favorite players Mizuho and Kaoruko as Aoi’s barriers to victory. Notice that he didn’t mention the names of their partners. Reiya has a secret weapon! Akihiro recognized Eve’s Blue Bullet swing. Leo Millafoden’s student is on the course.
Uh oh. Eve and Aoi argue about ball placement. Eve wants to gamble, but her shot lands in the bunker. And Aoi can’t get it out! They’re so far ahead that they have time to giggle and have fun. Amane complains about gambling when they don’t need to, but Ichina supports aggressive play. The Raiou pair will need that bold attitude in the semifinals and finals against Kaoruko and Mizuho. Oh? Aoi recognized Mizuho’s stance and swing. They’re the same as her father’s, Kazuhiko! BIRDIE WING drops hints of a generational battle of golf. Eve wanted to win the first round 10 – 8 (winning ten holes in a row with eight to play), but Mizuho and Kaede managed that perfect game. That’s revenge for Raiou beating their stroke-play score in the regional qualifiers.
The foreshadowing comes thick and fast. Now Coach Amuro is impatient. He doesn’t have time to develop his first-year students. He needs them to win now! Is he sick? Is he going back to the pro leagues after the high school season? BIRDIE WING sets up the drama. Ichina’s second night rooming with Eve went as well as the first night. Feet fans rejoice! Leo is at a bar. Close by? More drama. Akihiro has a direct line to Seira Amawashi. He wants to know what the deal is with Reiya. Oh no. There’s confirmation that Reiya has a health issue.
Eve and Aoi continue their aggressive play, but now they’re making wagers on mistakes. Eve wants burgers every time Aoi makes a mistake. Aoi will get a kiss when Eve messes up! Fun teasing.
Next time, Eve and Aoi play Kaoruko and Kuyou. See you in January!
