How do you tell the difference between ecchi comedy anime and hardcore hentai? Besides annoying mosaic patterns, I mean. It’s the timing of when something or someone interrupts the sex scene! In hentai, that interruption could trigger the FFM or Hidden Sex tag. But the characters have already exchanged bodily fluids in several orifices at that coitus interruptus moment. An ecchi anime, like Yandere Dark Elf, uses datum interruptum before the getting gets good!
I’m sure you’ve heard the term coitus interruptus at some point. It’s Latin for “interrupted sexual intercourse,” referring to pulling out before “completion.” We use it colloquially for any cock-blocking event these days. But you can’t call what happens in this Yandere Dark Elf episode “sex.” Many romantic anime interrupt a kiss, a moment of intimacy, or emotional vulnerability to stagnate relationship progress, for a comedy gag, or an episode cliffhanger. We see the same formula in Rent-a-Girlfriend, Goddess Café Terrace, and most anime with reluctant cherry boy main characters. In Latin, that moment is a date, event, or appointment. Thus, we have datum interruptum.
I hate the narrative device, specifically when authors use it to keep a zombie story shuffling along because they make too much money juggling a harem with an annoying, cringey liar and don’t know how to land a conclusion. *Cough* Rent-a-Girlfriend *cough*. Yandere Dark Elf did it twice in episode 3! Hinata’s lips almost touched a dark elf’s nipple and lips before a pushy blonde girl stopped him. Rude! At least Sakura apologized preemptively by showing her bare boobs. Cecil, the tall healer of Hinata and Mariabelle’s hero party, had better do us a solid soon.

Is Mariabelle athletic? Uh, no. That volleyball is safe from smacking. Dark elves use dark magic, so this makes sense. Uh oh. Mariabelle wishes to impress Hinata with her physical prowess, but he knows better. Did Mariabelle forget how they were in the Hero’s Party? He’s familiar with her magic skills. Ouch. Mariabelle is still uncoordinated, though. Her sprained ankle sends her right to a nurse’s office fantasy setting for Yandere Dark Elf. Don’t disappoint her, Hinata!
I’ve heard of captivating thighs, but Mariabelle makes it literal. Her heavy muttering hits differently when her squishy thighs squish Hinata’s squishy cheeks. Squishy! Now we’re getting somewhere. Mariabelle convinced Hinata to recite the Japanese “pain, pain, fly away” spell (痛いの痛いの飛んでいけ, itaino itaino tonde ike). But he added kisses trailing up her legs. I never saw that in any slice-of-life anime! I saw licking cut fingers devolve into suggestive situations, though. Did Mariabelle scratch or cut any other part of her body? Should she have? Naughty dark elf. She’s not wearing a bra! Kissing nipple… NO! Read the doujins for that action, but you can stay here for the comedic interruptions. Better luck next time, Mariabelle.
Can a Yandere Dark Elf Forgive a Third Wheel Date?
Oh, okay. The show offered no transition to the next chapter. Just turn the page and accept the new scene. We’re shopping for Mariabelle’s skin-tight, form-fitting clothes! I mean, I hope we are. Sakura, an alleged girl, should be an expert on clothes shopping. Hinata, an alleged boy, knows nothing about women’s clothes. Likely story! Poor Mariabelle. Sakura interrupted her expectations again. Datum interruptum. Ah. Mariabelle quickly turned around. She can buy better underwear for Hinata’s enjoyment with Sakura’s help. Let’s go shopping!
Yandere Dark Elf has three sexy lingerie sets for Mariabelle. Approved. You can’t escape the ecchi, Sakura. What are you wearing? Age-appropriate adorableness. Thumbs up! Mariabelle fails to grasp the concept of a privacy curtain for fitting rooms.
Aha. Sakura has a moment for girl talk with Mariabelle. What’s the deal with her and Hinata? Mariabelle wishes they were partners. It’s origin story time! Hinata rescued the dark elf when humans were “attacking” her. The context isn’t clear, but they ripped her top and exposed her puffy, pink nipples. We should recall that humans in the other world of Yandere Dark Elf had prejudice against dark elves because of their empathic abilities. Sakura should screw up her courage to tell Hinata how she feels, too.

Oho. Hinata took out Mariabelle for a romantic date after the shopping trip with Sakura. Lame excuse, though. Dark elves need trees, or something. But Mariabelle needs someone to cheer her up, so how about a kiss on the cheek? She would have preferred he pick up where he left off in the nurse’s office, but this is fine. Hair tentacles, activate! The yandere dark elf needs MOAR!
Aw crap. This IS the datum interruptum episode. Hinata and Mariabelle’s party members came to Japan! They aim to return Mariabelle to their world!
The end credits added more dark elf flesh to ogle.
