Although we as anime fans love the studios that make our favorite shows, and they presumably love us for supporting them, there are plenty of moments when anime trolled fans hard. Let’s look at some of the best moments now!
This was really good troll by Kyoani, who got away without showing us Mio’s pantsu. What are other times when anime trolled fans?
We have actual shimapan in stock! See https://t.co/vFGrhz71ai pic.twitter.com/XKOCKdaboo

Mio’s Shimapan
In a famous scene in K-On!, the super-shy Mio finishes an on-stage performance only to trip and fall, exposing her iconic blue-and-white-striped panties to the whole school. But they avoided actually showing us the panties, leaving it up to doujin artists to pick up the slack.
Hibike! Yuri-Bait
Look up yuri-bait in a dictionary and you’ll see a picture of Hibike! Euphonium.
The Surprise Drop of Haruhi Season 2
One fun moment was when Kadokawa announced a re-broadcast of season 1 of The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya…only to surprise fans with a whole second season. Those crafty devils…
Haruhi Endless Eight
Haruhi, who is God, after all, didn’t want summer to end, so it repeated in an endless loop 15,532 times. which is 595 years if you’re keeping count. And we as fans got to watch these exact events unfold 8 times because naturally, 8 is ∞ if you turn it on its side. While many fans hated it, I thought it was a bold and fresh idea for the studio to attempt.
The Disappearance of Haruhi Film
It’s super easy to miss, but when Kyon calls Yuki Nagato by her first name at a touching moment at the end of the film, it sounds like he’s going to confess love to her or something, since it’s rare for people to use their given names in Japanese unless they’re very close. But alas, yuki is the Japanese word for snow, and he’s commenting that snow has started to fall.
The Confession Headfake in Hyouka
Hyouka was one of the most gorgeous anime series I’ve ever seen, and at its conclusion, it looked like Oreki was going to confess his feelings to Chitanda. Alas, it was another time anime trolled its fans. *Shakes fist at Kyoani*
Troll Level: Mai Minakami
The most hilarious character in Nichijo, she’s always doing something random to mess with Yuki.
The Day a Time Machine Crashed Into a Building in Akihabara
Finally, a troll that’s not by Kyoani! When it came time for the iconic Radio Kaikan building in Akihabara to be torn down and replaced with a new building, what did Nitroplus do? Construct a real “crashed time machine” to troll Steins;Gate fans.
What are some of the best troll events in anime? This scene from Jojo Stardust Crusaders was a lot of fun.
(Also, does @alyankovic know he gets a shoutout in this scene? He does now.) pic.twitter.com/b7S5w54d0s

The Joseph Joestar Resurrection Scene
This was a hilarious scene and provides a shoutout to Weird Al Yankovic at the same time.
This Convenience Store from Kiss x Sis.
I’m guessing the ice cream they sell is chocolate.
Yebichu Beer
In the original Evangelion, the “Yebisu” beer that Misato is drinking has Yebichu on the label. This is a shoutout to Oruchuban Ebichu, a hilarious anime from 1999 in which a housekeeping hamster (voiced by Misato voice actress Kotono Mitsuishi) makes sexy observations about her perverted owner. The voice actress was a fan of the Ebichu manga and would read lines from the comic in Misato’s voice during the production of Eva. Then she starred in the Ebichu anime when it was produced in 1999.
Nice Boat
Everyone was ready to see the final shocking episode of School Days…only to be trolled with video of a “nice boat” somewhere in Norway. The broadcast had been switched at the last minute over concern that a murder that happened several days before might have been anime-inspired.
My reaction when I google Laputa but get la puta madre. pic.twitter.com/jlWfXkl4RI

Castle in the Sky, Laputa
The oldest troll of them all, Laputa is the third kingdom visited by Gulliver in Gulliver’s Travels by Jonathan Swift. Fluent in Spanish, he purposefully named his floating island “the whore” to make some political point that’s lost to us 293 years later.
