Slice-of-life is by far my favorite anime genre. It earns my favoritism because it’s the one genre not easily replicated in real life. It may not be possible to adventure in another world. Are you the type to buy hazelnut bianco lattes to go with your Big Macs? You’re in for a culture shock if you would suddenly teleport to Trevelin, Argentina. You may not be able to have a harem, but it’s a common occurrence for plenty of people. But working a part-time job while enjoying solid friendships, a neat apartment, and still having the luxury of travel, that’s outright black magic. And whenever a show like that takes on a pervy tone, I’m filled with a jealousy I never thought possible. That’s the dream. Because of that, ecchi slice-of-life shows are my favorite. And I’m here to recommend some to you.
This being J-List, I know that most of its readers enjoy mountainous oppai shoved in their faces. I’ve never been partial to that, so two recommendations aren’t like that. But I find that tastefully ecchi shows almost always appeal to a broader audience, so try these. Not only will they give you a boner, they’ll mend a battered heart.
Ecchi Slice-of-life Anime — Hinako Note
Studio Passione animated this, so do I need to say anything else? Passione is to ecchi fans what Tarantino films are to foot fetishists. They complement each other perfectly. Despite its atrocious rating on MAL, Hinako Note has something that would appeal to most viewers. With an opening song that would make Eminem twitch and a socially awkward main character that would make Bocchi lovers gush, Hinako Note entertains.
Focusing on the titular Hinako “Hina” Sakuragi, the show tells the tale of a shy and introverted country bumpkin. Hina is so averse to socializing that whenever someone new approaches her, she stiffens to the point she mimics a scarecrow. Feeling inspired by a play and recognizing her need for change, she moves to Tokyo to pursue stage acting. However, after reaching her new school, Hina learns its theater club is facing extinction. Unsure of how to continue forward, she heeds the advice of her landlady and starts a theater troupe with her manor mates. And with that, Hina’s road toward acting and self-change begins.
Why You Should Watch Hinako Note
It has THE BEST FAN SERVICE OF ANY SHOW I’VE SEEN. Thank you for coming to my TED Talk. Seriously though, this ecchi slice-of-life is how anime should do fan service. Individuals vary in how they make that judgment, but I prefer to see unexpected and tasteful lewdness. Sure. I’m as happy as anyone else when a show like Immoral Guild throws oppai in my face. But if I wanted to bury my face in sweater mounds, I’d get a girlfriend or book a call girl. I prefer it when lewdness unexpectedly shows up. A cute girl flashing me on the street is much better than my partner showing off at home. That’s where Hinako Note shines. You’re lulled into thinking you’re watching a cute-girls-do-cute-things show, and then it’s oppai galore!
Feet shots? They’re there. Autonepiophilia? It’s in there. Bunny girls with boobs the size of Mount Kilimanjaro? Hinako Note has it! And those shots always come out of left field. I can’t count the times I was comfortably watching a kawaii scene and then… BOOM! PHOCKING BOOBA AND ASS SHOTS! My mom occasionally watches anime with me, and because of that, I sometimes watch shows in her living room whenever I visit. When I watched this, she looked at me like she found my name on Jeffery Epstein’s list. That was a look I didn’t even get when I watched Domestic Girlfriend — that’s what this show can do. Hinako Note is streaming on Crunchyroll. The Mitsuki (Story and illustration) manga source material concluded on January 27, 2021, with seven tankoubon volumes.
Ecchi Slice-of-life Anime — Tawawa on Mondays
I’ve always disliked it when people ignore shows because of their run time. There’s plenty of entertaining short-form anime out there. Sadly, most people see a run time below 22 minutes and instantly skip it. Usually, people argue that you can’t fit a meaningful story in that short time. But let me ask, how much of your life has been truly meaningful? I guarantee you, for most of us, that’s a small percentage of our overall time. The rest is the realm of the mundane. So, while Tawawa on Mondays may only be five minutes long, it’s still long enough to be titillating.
Tawawa on Mondays follows several well-endowed heroines and their romantic interests. This kawaii, ecchi slice-of-life primarily focuses on the platonic but flirtatious relationship between Ai-chan and an older salaryman. Enamored with Ai-chan’s bubbly nature, he acts as her pseudo-bodyguard as they travel to school and work.
Why You Should Watch Tawawa on Mondays
Kawaii high school girls and boobs the size of Greenland (#MakeGreenlandGreatAgain). Life can be unbearable at times. Once you pass 25, it’s a full-speed downward spiral. Trust me, that’s when adult responsibilities propagate like bacteria on a warm seafood buffet. And once you place the daily grind alongside bills, mortgages, and rent, you quickly run out of time. When it was easy for us to binge three seasons of anime in our teenage years. That’s a feat that becomes progressively harder with age. That’s where short-form anime comes in. With their shorter spans, you can relive your glory days and binge a few seasons per day. If you have an hour, you can run through Tawawa on Mondays while getting a mountainous dollop of an ecchi fix. And for romance aficionados, the show also has some awe-inducing moments.
Tawawa on Mondays’s second ONA is streaming on Crunchyroll. Unfortunately, the original ONA isn’t available on any streaming service stateside. It is on the NBCUniversal YouTube channel for anime and music. (This is where I’d put a VPN sponsorship if I had one! But you read that in Timmy Turner’s dad’s voice.) Niconico also streams the original ONA. The show adapts Kiseki Himura’s Twitter illustrations, which he releases every Monday. Kodansha’s Weekly Young Magazine has serialized two manga adaptations. These include a standard version and a blue monochrome edition that stays true to the original artwork.
Comic Girls — Unexpectedly Ecchi
With a show this fuwa-fuwa, fan service was far from what I expected. Yet, the anime gods looked at my ignorance and gave it a beatdown fitting of the bus scene in Nobody. For a laid-back show about four (five) female mangakas, it’s comedic and playfully incorporates its pervy content.
Comic Girls first follows Moeta Kaoruko, a newbie mangaka who struggles with social settings and getting her work serialized. At the behest of her editor, Moeta, going by the pen name of Kaos, moves to an all-girls mangaka dormitory. This hopefully forces the timid Kaos-chan to not only become more social but also those interactions should inspire her band work. And as she becomes friendly with the other girls in the dorm, the move sends Kaos-chan in the right direction. But unlike other shows where the power of friendship always prevails, Kaos-chan stumbles even with support, and that’s a breath of fresh air if you ask me.
Kick Back, Relax, and Welcome a Pervy Coziness
Anime can be inspiring at times. And this ecchi slice-of-life will make you want to try harder, no matter what you’re facing. Not only do you see a lot of half-naked JKs and yuri perviness, but Kaos-chan is wholeheartedly endearing. She’s the type of protagonist you can’t help but cheer. Think of her as a mix between Bocchi from Bocchi the Rock and Bocchi from Hitori Bocchi no Marumaru Seikatsu. The show’s other characters are equally lovable, including the ero-mangaka Ruki, who struggles with the nature of her pervy work. Of all the shows I’m pitching here, this is the one that relies the most on comedy. The outlandish and over-reacted scenes always managed to get a chuckle out of me. The show also does a fine job of motivating you. I can attest it’s made me put in more effort during bad times.
Apart from that, it’s always soothing to watch when I have an awful day. Comic Girls is the tamest show on this list, but the ecchi and fan service moments have such high production values that they deserve their place. It’s a feel-good, do-good show, and I know this may not be the best place to plug this, but it’s worth the watch. But Studio Nexus gave us Chivalry of a Failed Knight, The Eminence in Shadow Season 2, and Darwin’s Game, so you know they know what they’re doing. Comic Girls is streaming on Crunchyroll. The manga concluded in February 2023 with nine volumes, so if you’d like to read the story’s conclusion, you’re in luck.
