Jahy has trouble maintaining her pride when she shows off her massive new crystal and when Druj discovers her working at a cozy pub.
Restoration Plan No. 3 – “The Great Jahy Can’t Brag”
Hmm.
The Great Jahy continues to mine Jahy’s pathetic pride for laughs. She had a lot of self-esteem when she was the Dark Realm’s number two, so there’s going to be a lot of jokes. Her need to prop up her self-image before Druj led to the successful comedic device of compounding lies. Thankfully for Jahy’s fragile ego, the Store Manager smoothed things over so Druj would not think less of her former boss. Jahy also gave Druj a special night where her master served her.
That heartwarming scene had the elements we expect from a slice-of-life show. There was sentimental music in the background. There was a knowing look from an elder as that elder appreciated other people enjoying themselves. And the Great Jahy herself proclaimed she had learned something about herself. She realized she needed the praise and approval from those closest to her. That’s what Jahy did throughout the whole episode. She tried to get compliments from the Store Manager, but those words sounded like a parent humoring her child.
Then Jahy went to Druj for effusive admiration, but Druj’s compliments are conditional. Jahy needed to be the Great Jahy for her, which meant she needed to lie and exaggerate to earn that energetic praise. Jahy is not a clever storyteller, so it takes much effort to stay in front of Druj’s imagination. That’s too tiring for her. However, by the end of the episode, Jahy realized she needs to make people smile and thank her. That’s the positive spin on her neediness because she did not make many demons smile in the Dark Realm. The human world works differently, so Jahy will need to balance her present conditions with Druj’s memories.
I liked how The Great Jahy showed Druj’s protective side come out to defend her master. Their circumstances have become upside down in the human world, but her attitude and concern for Jahy haven’t changed. In contrast, the former demon commander will need to grow in empathy and modesty to survive her drab existence. These two make a fun pair for the slice-of-life comedy moments. It’s even funnier to note that the voice actors have a strange connection through their work in Gabriel DropOut. We’ve already mentioned that Naomi Oozora played Satania, but did you recognize Druj’s voice actor Kana Hanazawa as Raphiel? I can’t wait for more hilarious chemistry from this duo.
Heh.
Fun. The Great Jahy shows us sexy and cruel flashbacks of the former demon commander. Where’s the Demon Lord? Druj is still her biggest fan. Number Two was number one in random killings. Now she’s number one in serving beer and wearing big red rocks. She’s so needy. Look how she fishes for compliments from the Store Manager. Why does Jahy think a regular human, like the Store Manager, would admire a mana crystal? A waitress needs to take that thing off. Jahy is sure she won’t go back to her kiddie form anymore. We’ll see about that! Aaahh! The Store Manager said, “ara, ara.” I’m dead. Okay, I’m back.
Har. The dark demoness claims she can work until the bar’s last call! Her boasts sound so mundane now. Jahy Waitress mode montage. A dark-skinned beer wench is a man’s romance. Jahy loves receiving praise. The Store Manager is deviously manipulative. She’s the Demon Lord of the Maou Tavern. She made her employee use her magic rock to clean up the tavern! Just how dirty and greasy was this place? The demon girl talks about a faceless Demon Lord. Has she ever met him? There are hints of a connection between how the bar’s name is “Maou” and how mana crystals and small demon forms don’t surprise the Store Manager. And how the Great Jahy became Bar Staff Number Two. Would the Demon Lord’s chibi form look like the Store Manager? Ah, whoops! Cleaning the bar used up all that crystal’s magic! The Store Manager likes Hy-chan’s adorable form the best.
Jahy needs a more reliable source of praise. Druj! Jahy used to receive constant recognition and attention. Druj provides high-quality obsequiousness. Uh oh. Here comes an over-dramatization of last week’s episode. Where is this “Sea of Trees” in an “uncharted land?” Where did Druj hear about this? Oh, dear. Druj thinks that Jahy is still ruthless, but Hy-chan has needed a lot of help from others in this world. Druj’s “poor” mana crystal collection dwarfs her former master’s meager efforts.
On a different day, Druj finds the Great Jahy in front of the Maou tavern. How will Jahy get out of this? Oh ho. Druj finds the name of the pub intriguing. Does Jahy own it? Druj’s reactions are so cute. Here comes the cascade of lies. Please stop, Jahy. At least she’s self-aware. Ah. Store Manager arrives. Now what? Ohohoho! Druj does not like “Hy-chan.” “Lying is bad, Hy-chan,” says Store Manager. Ahahaha! She knows that, but she can’t stop!
What a treat for Druj. The Great Jahy is serving her today. Druj has expensive tastes, and she eats a lot! Here’s the slice-of-life lesson for the week. Jahy works for praise. But she’ll need to work for money in this world to pay off Druj’s bill! Jahy preserved her pride, but her wallet suffered a mortal blow!
Ooh. The Great Space Pirate Jahy omake after the end credits. Landlady Ryou is the rival pirate. Is this Jahy’s dream? Jahy owes rent on her ship, and she hasn’t told Druj about it. This sounds familiar… Of course. Space Police Store Manager stops the fighting. The space pirates cannot deny her power!
Next time, Jahy meets another demon outcast.
Did you enjoy the episode omake? Hopefully, this becomes a regular feature. Did these fun side adventures happen in the manga? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.
