Tejina-sempai actively recruits Assistant-kun to join her Magic Club.
Hmm.
The first question that came to mind after the first minute of watching Tejina Sempai was, “Will anyone get names, or will the characters just be known by their roles?” After another minute or so, I stopped caring, because Tejina-sempai is so adorable! She’s so clumsy, but she still has that performance ethic of “the show must go on.”
The scene that cracked my heart and made me want to root for Tejina-sempai was when Assistant-kun was buying time in front of the audience while she prepared her Mystery Box. She was so jealous that he could do a successful magic trick in front of people. Her main source of dramatic tension is that she has terrible stage fright, even if it’s just one person she’s performing for, causing all her magic performances to fail spectacularly. She’s also an unfortunate-girl type, where even her animal companions dislike her.
But she’s cute, has big boobs, a lip fang, and when she gets in trouble, she makes sexy faces. Oh, they aren’t supposed to be sexy faces in context, but come on. We know what’s going on here. The trick of each trick (hee!) is how it relates to a kink or fetish. I’m all for it!
The format for this short gag anime is short segments inside Magical Sempai. The first 12-minute episode had 4 chapters. The next one will have 5! This means the comedy setups are quick and the punchlines quicker. Perhaps the buildup in the comedic tension will be uneven, given how little time each chapter has, but having a straight man in Assistant-kun — with his running internal commentary — should smooth things over.
Judging from the spoiler-rich images in the end credits, I can’t wait to meet the other two sexy girls and find out how they get sucked into the comedy and how they ended up in those outfits. Abracadabra! Tejina-sempai pulled a sexy gag comedy out of her hat.
Heh.
Judging from the opening credit scenes, it looks like there will be lots of fun characters with big personalities, and that’s not just a metaphor either. Tejina-sempai appears to have three modes: magic show, sharing a bad idea, and begging for help. Her club sign, unofficially attached to another sign tells us it’s the 奇術 (kijutsu) Magic Club, where Tejina is Magical Sempai.
1st Chapter – “The Unknown Sempai”
MC-kun is the narrator, and since’s he’s just talking to himself, I guess we won’t get a name until later. There’s Tejina-sempai, ready to put on a show! For one person… Ack! Tejina-sempai is cute but clumsy and she has terrible stage fright! Straight to throwing up. Twice!
MC-kun is now dubbed “Assistant-kun” by the irrepressible Sempai, who also fails to introduce herself. His commentary is great straight-man comedy. Tejina-sempai is too precious! Of course, Assistant-kun is going to give her a little bit more attention. Maybe just not his money right away. She tries so hard to keep her trick going. The money magically flew into her wallet… Magic tricks are expensive.
Wait! Don’t go Assistant-kun! She has another trick, involving ropes. I see he is also a man of culture. A beautiful girl in bondage? Of course he’ll watch! Successful trick! Assistant-kun applauds her sexy display! Ha!
2nd Chapter – “Sempai in a Box”
We’re still in the club recruitment period. Tejina-sempai keeps trying. Run away, Assistant-kun! Tejina-sempai is in great shape, she’s faster than Assistant-kun!
Oh man. Forced to do magic for a bored crowd. Ha! Assistant-kun can actually do some sleight of hand, which makes Tejina-sempai jealous! This is the scene that broke me. She wants that praise from the audience too.
The Mystery Box is finally ready, or not. What took her so long? Um, we know she’s not going to escape that box, right? Then she’s bailed out by Assistant-kun, again. This is going to be a pattern. What kind of mystery will Assistant-kun find in that box? Whoa. Her sheepish facial expression looks just like a satisfied sex face. Assistant-kun thinks so, too!
3rd Chapter – “Sempai Calls”
Well, that’s one way to confirm Assistant-kun will not get a name either. Tejina-sempai is crazy! Yelling over the PA system for “Assistant-kun.” Hey, he answered to it, so that’s good enough.
That’s a nice gesture, baking melon bread to make up for being annoying. Except, Assistant-kun knows better. But look at that! She’s eating her own cooking. That’s rare in a clumsy girl. Chomp! Ha! She stuck his key in the bread. Sneaky! Tejina-sempai is too trusting. Assistant-kun locked her in the box! Let the man eat in peace, please.
Oh, so that’s how you get out of the Mystery Box. Brute force.
Simply asking for a glass of milk to drink with your bread will not do. She wants to do the disappearing milk trick. No! Assistant-kun is still choking, you know. Splash! Was there ever any doubt she wouldn’t get soaked? Gulp! She helped Assistant-kun clear his throat with the milk anyway. Kinda.
4th Chapter – “Sempai and the Pigeon”
A magician has to have a white dove, Tejina-sempai explains, but it’s not going to be that simple for her. Assistant-kun just straight out thinks to himself, “Lucky bird!” for bonding with Tejina-sempai. He’s not wrong.
Ouch! The bird pecked Tejina-sempai! Poor girl. Tejina-sempai keeps birdseed in her chest. Instead of eating off her hand, the bird goes straight for the seed source! Smart bird.
Birthing Pigeon Trick! Tejina-sempai is so dedicated to the performance. The bird flew out the window! Bahamut, come back! Bahamut? What a name!
These cards in the end credits are full of spoilers for the rest of the season. Each one appears to show the punchline of the little chapters in each episode.
