I like the newish trend in anime of middle-aged men starting new careers. Kaiju No. 8 captured my eyeballs last season, but Kafka ate a flying kaiju to gain his superhuman abilities. Shinmai Ossan Boukensha (新米オッサン冒険者, The Ossan Newbie Adventurer) takes pages from the premises of Kenichi: The Mightiest Disciple and One-Punch Man.
For Rick Gladiatol (it should be “Gladiator,” but the Shinmai Ossan Boukensha producers hard-coded that spelling into Rick’s character info), he quit his adventurer’s guild clerkship at 30. He survived two years of hellish training with the unclassifiable members of Orichalcum Fist. Rick returns to civilization with PTSD, an inferiority complex, and immeasurable stats in strength, magic, and stamina. Oh. And a dark elf maid with an equally unmeasurable bust size!
Should you watch this middle-aged man’s power fantasy? We’ve got reasons!
Shinmai Ossan Boukensha is a Comedy
The full title of this anime tells you it came from a user-generated content site before media companies desperate for intellectual properties adapted it into a light novel series and a manga. The title is its synopsis: The Ossan Newbie Adventurer, Trained to Death by the Most Powerful Party, Became Invincible. Rick walks into an adventurer’s guild, already superpowered. But flashbacks of his dark days under his mentors’ torture prove he came by his skills and strengths through honest perseverance. Unfortunately, he spent his days with monsters and had no sense of scale for other adventurers’ abilities. Rick’s inferiority complex could get old as a recurring joke. However, I’ll cut him some slack for his first day back in town.
Shinmai Ossan Boukensha Has Eye Candy for Girls and Boys!
I prefer heroes who look like they should have superpowers. The Orichalcum Fist adventuring party put Rick’s skinny body through the wringer! His masters must have fed him so much protein during those two years to quickly pack muscle onto him. So, for those who enjoy drooling over muscle-bound freaks, Shinmai Ossan Boukensha will ring your Pavlovian bell.
But the fanservice doesn’t end there. Oppai enthusiasts will have plenty to sneak glances at and turn away shyly. Rick’s former colleague, Alisa, confirms how Shinmai Ossan Boukensha will sprinkle the spice of a “man’s romance” to add sexy flavor to action and comedy scenes. Thank the original character designer, Tea@nakenashi, for his efforts. He also designed the characters for Villainess Level 99 earlier in the year.
Comedy, action, and fanservice sound like a fun combination so long as the visual quality stays consistent. And the voice actors keep drawing you in. But Shinmai Ossan Boukensha crossed all the fanservice streams in one character: Reanette Elfelt.
Dark Skin, Elf Ears, Maid Uniform, and Bodacious Tatas.
Reanette Elfelt (Saori Oonishi also voices Mejiro McQueen from Uma Musume: Pretty Derby and Ais Wallenstein from DanMachi) is a half-dark elf who retired from the deadly underground battle arena, where her nickname was “Dansai Kenki” (roughly, The Cutting Demon Swordswoman). Reanette has a reputation and a backstory. But she also has a front story! Gazongas!
Much of Shinmai Ossan Boukensha’s humor will come from Rick’s facial expressions. And he reserves a ton of reaction gags for Reanette’s accidental sex appeal. Reanette also has a monotone voice, so her emotionless demeanor creates an appealing mismatch between her face and bodily proportions. She’s a fanservice machine through her dark skin, elf ears, maid uniform, oppai, and usual emotional steadiness. I’m excited about seeing Reanette blush a bit or let warmth leak through her voice. Right into my veins!
