Pokémon Go. Wow. Remember when it was the shiny new thing everyone was talking about? That was a whole six years ago! It seems crazy, then, that it has taken this long for Pokémon Go to complete the circle and become part of the TCG, but that’s happening. We’ve got more Pokémon TCG news too, so let’s dive right in.
It’s the Porkel and Dorkel Show, where we throw sharp cards with all the force of Remy LeBeau at the face of consumerism and shout “give me rares or give me cake… I mean death!”
Pokémon GO-es Cardboard
The popular augmented reality Pokémon Go mobile game is bleeding through the edges of reality again and joining the best-selling Pokémon TCG as an expansion. The expansion will release in waves, starting July 1st, 2022.
Tokyo Mew Mew Creator Passes Away
Tokyo Mew Mew creator, Mia Ikumi, has passed away. She was 42 when she died on March 7th, due to a subarachnoid hemorrhage surrounding the brain, Anime News Network reports.
Tokyo Mew Mew New, a new anime based on her popular work Tokyo Mew Mew — which featured a 52-episode anime series and manga serialization — is scheduled to premiere in July. Ikumi had been overseeing the production before her death.
Charizard Card Lands Fraudster in Prison
When it comes to criminals getting rich off Pokémon, you gotta catch ‘em all!
A Georgia resident was convicted for wire fraud after he spent over $57,000 (USD) to buy a rare Charizard card for the Pokémon TCG. Where did he get the big bucks? The Economic Injury Disaster Loan made available by the Small Business Administration to help businesses struggling through the pandemic, that’s where. For his troubles, Vinath Oudomsine got 36 months in federal prison, a $10,000 fine, and had to pay back the original $85,000 loan.
The worst part? The card was forfeited during the investigation, according to WSB-TV 2 Atlanta. If that means some lucky detective now has an ultra-rare Charizard in his deck or the card is lost in a mess of red tape, I’m not sure. Hopefully we’ll get some closure later on down the line.
It wasn’t all that long ago that another Charizard went for a staggering amount of money, breaking previous records for the most money ever spent on a trading card at the time, a weighty $226,000 (USD).
