The popular Youtube series Man at Arms: Reforged by AWE me recently uploaded a video revealing their detailed process in recreating Kenshin Himura’s Sakabatō or Reverse Blade Katana from Rurouni Kenshin. The blacksmiths took all the time and research to perfectly bring this iconic blade to life.
Rurouni Kenshin begins during the 11th year of Japan’s Meiji period and centers on Hitokiri Battosai, a former assassin from the Bakumatsu. He then disappeared after his work against the bakufu and became the wandering swordsman Kenshin Himura promising himself not to take another life and protect the people of Japan. The manga was created by Nobuhiro Watsuki which was then adapted into an anime series, anime film, and live action films.
The sword was incredibly accurate to the anime and manga. The last part of the video shows the team testing its sharp and deadly reverse edge.
This isn’t the first time the Man at Arms: Reforged team recreated a weapon from Japanese anime and manga. They have recreated Kirito’s Elucidator from Sword Art Online, the 3D Maneuver Gear Sword from Attack on Titan, and Jeanne D’Arc’s Lance from Fate/Apocrypha and many more in the past.
They also recreated swords from popular games like the Virtuous Treaty from NeiR:Automata and Genji’s Dragonblade from Overwatch.
