It’s been a little over two years since the first season of Granblue Fantasy: The Animation aired, but now the anime is finally being continued with a follow up this fall. Fans of the popular mobile game rejoice! Season 2 will begin airing on October 4th in Japan. To help promote the new season, the first two episodes will be aired ahead of schedule at a special event in Japan on September 28th. The voice actors of Gran (Yuki Ono) and Lyria (Noa Higashiyama) will be present alongside producer Kenta Suzuki and director Yui Umemoto for social commentary and a questionnaire.
The event was announced in part with the release of the series’s second trailer with contains a brief preview of the theme music, “Stay With Me” as performed by rock group, Seven Billion Dots.
Currently there is very little known about this season’s plot beyond trailers and a few key visuals released. Fans have debated if it will be a continuation from the first season, or be its own special story arc, separate from the mobile game. Depending on episode count, it would be possible to clear several later in-game story arcs such the Girl in Blue arc, or the What Makes the Sky Blue arc. Tho, given context hints from the promo trailer, as well as the anime’s key visual, odds are that fans can expect an immediate direct continuation from where the first season left off, as well as heavy development for Katalina.
Since the first season hastily covered the first sixteen chapters of the game in twelve episodes hopefully we’ll see a full 24-episode season to allow less rushed storytelling. With the airship crew having gained so many party members in the later half of season 1 a full-length season would better benefit all characters with a chance for development beyond their initial introduction story, usually only lasting one or two episodes. No doubt all unanswered questions will be made clear come the preview event later this month.
Granblue Fantasy: The Animation is based on Cygames’ mobile and web-browser game of the same name, free to play on all computers via their website, and all on smart devices. While there is no formal English release, there is a language setting for it if downloaded from the App Store and Google Play.
