Aoi’s comeback against pro golfer Reika promises victory, but sudden rain threatens the golf girl’s chances.
Episode 20 — “The Rainbow That Tells of Victory”
Hmm.
Yuri caddies. We don’t talk much about the sidepieces in BIRDIE WING, but we need to acknowledge the lily-gilded pairs. The golf girls’ story has focused on Eve nearly exclusively, so we know more about Lily and Ichina. But the prissy Amane has also been with us since the beginning, so she deserves a chance to shine. She’s a certified weather girl, you know! Until Eve and Aoi meet up again, we’ll need to rely on their caddies and companions to supply us with sweet yuri affection. And Eve might remember Ichina’s name before the end of the season.
BIRDIE WING confirmed: Leo trained Eve to set up a revenge match against Kazuhiko using golf girl proxies. He taught his Bullet System to keep her alive in the golf underworld of Nafrece. Additionally, he hoped Eve would be ready for a generational golf rematch when she regained her memories. Eve trained under Leo for three years and played underworld golf for two years, adding up to five years of golf experience. How long has Aisha, Leo’s new protégé, been learning Leo’s golf Bullet System? She looks like she’s the same age as Eve when Leo found Eve in Nafrece. But Leo takes Aisha with him on his golf travels.
We saw him have affection for Rose, but Leo cut his losses after he rescued her from a hand amputation in the past BIRDIE WING episodes. In contrast, Eve had called Leo a “demon coach,” and then Leo at once left when he thought Eve mastered his golf style. As a result, I’m curious about Leo’s relationship with Aisha. Does he act as an adoptive father or as Eve’s demon coach? I’ll look forward to answers in the next few episodes.
The anime has hinted at and developed Leo’s motivations over the last twenty episodes, so it was not shocking to hear him express his wants out loud. Five years of obsession over a revenge golf match. Leo’s story still fits under BIRDIE WING’s theme of the Sins of the Fathers. Similarly, Reiya’s hope for Aoi to play Eve again also falls under a generational revenge rematch scenario, but it is a friendly rivalry. Kazuhiko died, and Reiya has a congenital disease, so they can’t play golf again. But their daughters can!
Unfortunately, Reiya’s backstory of fulfilling a promise felt forced into a mirror image of Leo’s revenge plot. Reiya only discovered Eve was his friend’s child four episodes ago, so the show didn’t have enough time to match the foreshadowing and emotional development belonging to Leo’s overarching presence. However, Reiya could orchestrate a personal revenge plot by engineering a match between Aoi and Aisha. How about that for a throwdown golf rematch in BIRDIE WING?
Heh.
Aw. Look at the smol versions of Aoi and Amane. Aoi says the adults are forcing her to play a fun game, and her attitude continues into the present. Aisha’s demon skull logo is in the opening credits. How much will she feature in the episode, though? According to Golf TV, Aoi trails Reika by four strokes as they enter the final round. Can Aoi beat Reika on the last day? Have you been paying attention to this show for twenty episodes? Amane plans to use the rain to Aoi’s advantage and make it fun! Oops. Aoi missed a birdie chance, so Reika now has a five-stroke lead.
Suddenly, BIRDIE WING has Eve on a plane with Ichina and Alan. Where are they going? We’ll find out soon, but the golf action is under dark clouds for Aoi. Just like Amane hoped for! Aoi and Amane are having fun now! Reika, not so much. Kinue enjoys watching Aoi erase Reika’s lead in only two holes. Two eagles in a row! Reika isn’t happy but expects the course officials to postpone the game. Uh oh. Weatherwoman Amane predicted the rain would end! Har. Amane made a pun about rain because her name uses the kanji for it (雨音 — Amane; 雨, ame — rain).
Can Aoi close it out on the final hole? Yes, yes, she can! Seira choked out her administrative aide. Reika congratulated Aoi but wants the neo-pro to go on the American tour and get out of her way. Hahaha! Girls in glasses are cute, Amane! Oh no. Aoi thought when she became a pro golfer, Amane would leave her side. Think again! Aoi needs to take responsibility for ruining Amane’s life by taking her with her on the pro tour! Hoho. Aoi doesn’t need to worry about Amane’s school because the red-glasses-wearing girl is much more intelligent than the golfing airhead. Amane protests the yuri love, but her heart isn’t in it.
Epilogue time for BIRDIE WING. Ah. Eve and her crew flew to Scotland. Aw. Aoi became a pro before Eve. Does that count as a loss in their running tally? Eve aims to win the European Women’s Open, but a red-headed demoness stands in her way. She has a Blue Bullet too! It’s Leo! He knows Eve recovered her memories. He wants to fight against the daughter of the only man to ever defeat him with his new student, Aisha Khambatta! Eve was so rattled that she remembered Ichina’s name!
Next time, Aisha proves her ultra-unorthodox golf style is dangerous. What will Eve’s Rainbow Bullet look like?
BIRDIE WING -Golf Girls’ Story- streams on Crunchyroll and VRV in Japanese audio with English subtitles.
Did you expect Amane to be a weather girl? She predicted the rain’s behavior as if she could control it. Just like Weather from JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure Stone Ocean! Not exactly. But J-List has a fun Nendoroid figure up for preorder. Check it out!
We haven’t had many chances to watch Aoi play golf lately. Did you have as much fun watching her as Aoi did playing? Or do you prefer the more exciting game Eve plays? Let us know in the comments below or online on Facebook, Twitter, or Discord.
